Carrie Underwood's vocal is no match for tornado at CMA Awards
On Thursday evening, November 1, 2012, the 46th annual CMA Awards took place in Nashville. Each year, The Country Music Association boasts the CMAs as country music's biggest night and this year's show was certainly in keeping with that claim. Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Hunter Hayes are just a few of the country music stars who helped to pull off another phenomenal show.
One highlight of the evening was Carrie Underwood's return to the CMA stage. Though fans certainly enjoyed seeing her perform with Brad Paisley last year, it was good to see Carrie Underwood back, performing her own new, music. And what a performance she gave!
As the lights went down and the intro to Blown Away began, there was already a buzz of excitement flowing through the auditorium. Carrie Underwood stood amidst twirling smoke in a dress that was half jeweled, half gray wrap with her infamous sculpted leg showing on a cut-away right side.

As she began to sing, "her daddy was a mean old mister," the emotion of the part thrust itself from her and pulled the audience into the story right away. As she hit her lower register with, "there's not enough rain in Oklahoma to wash the sins out of that house," the energy in the room was like a live current waiting to lash out at the sinister things that roamed through her memories.
As Carrie Underwood reached for her high note and held it, she seemed to gain momentum from the crowd responding around her. Confetti began to blow across the crowd, evoking cheers and a feeling of rushing wind in the excitement over Carrie Underwood's performance.
When Carrie Underwood broke into the climactic runs of "blown away, blown away", a smoke tornado began to twist behind her, putting on a phenomenal display of power in both the symbolism and her voice rising above it. At the final note, the tornado vanished almost as if under the power of Carrie Underwood's voice and her final note rang out over the erupting cheers of the audience.
Carrie Underwood's 2012 CMA Awards performance was yet another display of her incredible vocal range and control, making it one of the most memorable performances of the night.
