Tomato genome project bears fruit

LONDON | Wed May 30, 2012 2:56pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - An international team of scientists has cracked the genetic code of the domesticated tomato and its wild ancestor, an achievement which should help breeders identify the genes needed to develop tastier and more nutritious varieties.

The full genome sequence of a tomato breed known as Heinz 1706, and a draft sequence for its closest wild relative Solanum pimpinellifolium, were published in the journal Nature on Wednesday.

Researchers who carried out the work said that together the sequences provide the most detailed look yet at the functional parts of the tomato genome and show order, orientation, types and relative positions of all of its 35,000 genes.

The sequences should help researchers find the links between certain tomato genes and the characteristics they determine, and will also extend scientists' understanding of how genetic and environmental factors affect the health of a crop.

"Tomatoes are one of the most important fruit crops in the world, both in terms of the volume that we eat and the vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals that both fresh and processed tomato products provide to our diets," said Graham Seymour, a professor of biotechnology at Nottingham University, one of 300 scientists involved in the Tomato Genome Consortium (TGC).

TOMATOES ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT

The tomato is also a good model to investigate the process of fruit ripening, so understanding its genome should help reveal the molecular circuits that make fruits ripen and give them their health-promoting properties, the team said.

"For any characteristic of the tomato, whether it's taste, natural pest resistance or nutritional content, we've captured virtually all those genes," said James Giovannoni from the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University, who was part of the U.S. tomato sequencing team.

Tomatoes represent a $2 billion market in the United States alone, while in Britain the market for tomatoes is worth around 625 million pounds ($980 million) a year.

The research also offers some insight into how the tomato and its relatives diversified and adapted to new environments over the years.

The scientists said the findings show the tomato genome expanded abruptly about 60 million years ago. Some of the genes generated during that expansion were involved in the development and control of ripening, making them particularly interesting to tomato breeders.

The TGC involved scientists in 14 countries including Argentina, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Britain, the United States and others.

Giovanni said the work has implications for other plant species.

Strawberries, apples, melons, bananas and other fleshy fruits share some characteristics with tomatoes, he explained, so knowledge about the genes involved in fruit ripening could potentially be applied to them, helping breeders and growers to improve food quality and cut costs.

"Now we can start asking a lot more interesting questions about fruit biology, disease resistance, root development and nutritional qualities," he said in a statement.

Therefore, for both the publishers and the advertisers, the PPC ads really are a key method to obtain online income. The visitors and the advertising networks also form a very important part of the PPC advertising world. Advertising can?t be positioned without the marketing networks and it cannot be seen without actual visitors.

Advantages of Pay Per Click Ads

The publisher is paid per click once the website visitors click on the ads which are posted on their website or blog. You can have just one single blog or several blogs for placing the ads.

The advertisers look for a legitimate web site where their advertisements will be shown. Because of this, the PPC advertising networks form a platform between the advertisers and publishers so that all are able to do business online.

1. With regard to Publishers: Pay Per Click is a beneficial way of making money because the visitors click the ads searching for information. More traffic results in more money from the ads. Also, the cost per click varies as per the keywords and the website with higher quality content generates a great income for that publisher.

2. With regard to Advertisers: Advertisers constantly need to promote their products on a associated web site to ensure that their products reach worldwide. That results in more sales making more profit for them. The price of the advertising is not that high since the advertisers can easily earn profits when their products are purchased.

3. For Advertising Networks: Advertising networks benefit from their business because they obtain good income from the advertisers.

Moreover, they can earn more from other sorts of advertising with their websites. In short, the advertising networks also have a website that becomes a very important platform for online advertising.

4. For Visitors: Those that click the PPC ads are forwarded to the website where they can buy the genuine products.

Some websites sell excellent products and some websites are only for advertising to achieve popularity. Finally, the visitor benefits after buying the product in the comfort of their home.

Online Business While We Snooze

Altogether, when we see the world of Online marketing, it is completely surviving on the basis of online advertising. No matter what, new websites are being created by the publishers so that the PPC advertising makes a good income for them even while they sleep.

The publishers put the ads on their blogs just once and the advertisers create the adverts only once. Both of them can relax and benefit even when they?re fast asleep.

The online advertising has many benefits; however, it also needs great consistency. A publisher remains constant while developing a blog and the advertiser remains consistent until the profit is made. Overall the benefits of the PPC advertising are amazing for everyone at all levels.

Apple gives Flattr micro-payment the? | Advanced E-Commerce,E ...

After a wishy-washy last couple of weeks, Apple has finally told the micro-payment donation app Flattr that there?s no deal. The iPhone maker said that the service violates the App Store?s terms and conditions with third-party payments.

?Apple is notoriously secretive about its motives or what would be the compliant and best way of doing things that are sort of new,? Flattr?s community manager Siim Teller wrote in a blog post. ?What does this mean for the future of Flattr inside applications for
iPhone and iPad??

With the motto, ?Support Great Web Content,? the idea behind Flattr is to help people give money to blogs, Web sites, podcast and video-makers in order for the businesses to continue creating products that users appreciate. When users see a ?Flattr? button on a Website they can click it to donate money.

Flattr?s payment system does use third-party payments, but until earlier this month it wasn?t a serious issue for Apple. It all began on May 6 when the tech giant rejected an update for the well-known podcast manager Instacast, which used Flattr?s platform.

With the rejection, Apple cited its App Store guideline that reads, ?The collection of donations must be done via a web site in
Safari or an SMS.? Then, the company told Flattr, ?We understand that directing your user outside of your app may not be the user experience you prefer to offer your users. However it is a common experience in a variety of iOS apps.?

As of last week, Apple made the final decision that even after a few changes to Instacast, Flattr was still in violation of the App Store?s terms and conditions.

Even though Apple has clear grounds not to accept Flattr?s app integration, according to The Next Web, it?s likely that the iPhone maker is being skittish about the platform competing with its own in-app payment system, which gives the company 30 percent of each purchase.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment and we will update this report when we learn more.

Figure skating's Slipchuk headed to Alberta Sports Hall of Fame ...

By Brian Swane, Examiner Sports

Posted 22 hours ago

1980s Edmonton.

A blue collar city still young enough to be finding its place in the world, the provincial capital defined itself through its sport heroes. So much so, Edmonton adapted the moniker 'City of Champions?.

The Eskimos owned the turf in the first half of the decade, the Oilers ruled the ice in the second half , and there was something brewing in Edmonton?s river valley, where a group of precocious figure skaters at the Royal Glenora Club sat verging on the spectacular.

?It just was a unique time to be in Edmonton and with all the success that was happening around Edmonton, you wanted to be a part of it,? says Michael Slipchuk.

An Edmonton native and proud product of the Glenora?s figure skating heydays, Slipchuk will take his place alongside the club?s most celebrated member, Kurt Browning, as a member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame during the hall?s 2012 induction ceremony in Red Deer on Friday (May 25).

?Kurt and I grew up together, trained together and competed together, so to be acknowledged in the same hall as Kurt is awesome,? says Slipchuk, who was nicknamed ?Slipper..?

The Glenora?s reputation for nurturing figure skaters was so great that athletes from around the world, including American Kristi Yamaguchi, moved to Edmonton to train. In 1991, the club boasted both the world and men?s and women?s singles champions, in Browning. And Yamaguchi.

Slupchuk wasn?t quite on that level, but at the same time, there were very few in his class. Between 1987 and 1992, he competed at five world championships, placing in the top 10 twice. In 1992 he won his only Canadian title and went on finish ninth at Olympic Games in Albertville, France.

?At the time, getting to the next level was just part of the process, but looking back at it over the years you realize that you were able to compete amongst the best,? says Slipchuk.

Slipchuk is being inducted into the hall as both an athlete and a builder ? his efforts in the latter category include several years coaching in Edmonton and Calgary, and now his current position as the director of high performance of Skate Canada.

It took Slipchuk a while to find his passion. Like most Edmonton kids growing up in that time, Slipchuk?s first love was hockey, but when he was in Pee Wee he tried figure skating.

Eventually, he made the switch full-time after deciding he just wasn?t built for hockey.

?I was about 13 or 14 and at that point I was just realizing I was very small, so it didn?t matter how fast you could skate ?You were in trouble,? he recalls with a laugh.

Slipchuk?s first big win was in 1983, when he became Canada Games men?s figure skating champion. Four years later, he made his World Championship debut, and from that point on, it was all glory all the time at the Glenora: The club was on a yearly basis cranking out elite skaters, including three Olympians in 1992 (Browning, Slipchuk, and Yamaguchi) and four more in 1994 (Susan Humphries. Lisa Sargent, and pairs duo Jamie Sale and Jason Turner).

?The skating we had here was at a high level every day, and that atmosphere really propelled the Royal Glenora Club right into the 90s as the place that people wanted to be in because they were producing a lot of young skaters,? says Slipchuk.

From his current post, which he took in 1996, Slipchuk has overseen a renaissance in Canadian figure skating. This year, for the first time since 1993, the Great White North can claim two world champions, in Patrick Chan and ice dance pair Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue.

Not only does he relish helping this generation of young skaters reach their potential, but Slipchuk says he particularly enjoys working with his peers whom he grew up skating with that are now also working with Skate Canada.

?I couldn?t ask for a better occupation than I have now.?

(AP) ? The Golden Gate Bridge was heralded as an engineering marvel when it opened in 1937. It was the world's longest suspension span and had been built across a strait that critics said was too treacherous to be bridged.

But as the iconic span approaches its 75th anniversary over Memorial Day weekend, the generations of engineers who have overseen it all these years say keeping it up and open has been something of a marvel unto itself.

Crews had to install a bracing system after high winds lashed and twisted the span in the 1950s, raising fears it would collapse. Years later, they had to replace vertical cables when they were found to have corroded in the bridge's damp, foggy climate, potentially destabilizing the span.

The bridge, which rises majestically above a Civil War era fort on the San Francisco side and arches across to the Marin County headlands on the north side, is currently in the midst of a seismic upgrade that has seen many of its key structures replaced or modified. Plans for a moveable barrier to separate north and southbound traffic and a net system to prevent suicides are also moving forward.

"When (one of the bridge's designers) made his final speech during opening day ceremonies in 1937, he said, 'I present to you a bridge that will last forever,'" said Daniel Mohn, the bridge's former chief engineer, who co-authored a book about the span. "What he should have said is, 'I present to you a bridge that will last forever if properly maintained.'"

The idea for a bridge across the Golden Gate strait, where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, was championed by the engineer Joseph Strauss in the 1920s. Strauss's original design, submitted to San Francisco city officials in 1921, called for a hybrid cantilever-suspension bridge. The idea for a full-suspension span ? the design that was ultimately built ? came later.

At a little more than three-fourths of a mile in length, the Golden Gate Bridge would become the world's longest suspension span.

It had to be light enough to hang from its own cables, but still strong enough to withstand the strait's fierce winds and the possibility of earthquakes. Some said it was impossible.

Engineers also had to calculate all the potential forces on the bridge without the help of computers.

"In those days, you had (notebooks) and a number two pencil and you wrote it out, did all the math at your desk," said Kevin Starr, a history professor at the University of Southern California, who has also written about the bridge.

Eleven men died during construction from 1933 to 1937 ? ten of them when scaffolding fell through a safety net that had been set up to protect workers.

The conditions were difficult, cold, foggy and windy, and workers who helped construct supports for the south tower had to contend with dangerous tides.

But it was the wind that would continue to vex engineers years after the bridge's completion. In 1951, it was closed for several hours when wind gusts approached 70 mph and caused the bridge to flutter.

It was twisting so badly, Mohn recalled during a recent phone interview, that the light standards at the center of the span were striking the main cables.

"It sure almost destroyed the Golden Gate Bridge," he said. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington ? a suspension bridge whose designer also worked on the Golden Gate ? had twisted and snapped in about 40 mph winds a little more than a decade earlier. That 1940 collapse was captured on film.

Although the Golden Gate Bridge had stiffening trusses that made it less susceptible to wind, it did sustain damage, Mohn said.

Officials decided to add lateral bracing that made the trusses more stable and reduced the chances of the bridge going into a potentially catastrophic twisting motion.

The bridge would be able to withstand winds of 70 mph today although the goal is to eventually increase its tolerance to 100 mph, according to Ewa Bauer, the bridge's current chief engineer.

The wind is not the only element to take its toll on the span. The damp, foggy air has also kept its painters and engineers busy.

"You couldn't have put the bridge in a more corrosive atmosphere than in the middle of the Golden Gate with that salt fog coming in," Mohn said.

Engineers discovered in the 1970s that the bridge's suspender ropes ? the vertical cables that connect the deck to the main cables ? had corroded, some so badly that they could be picked apart with a pocket knife.

The problem in part, Mohn said, was that bridge maintenance had been neglected for many years, particularly during World War II. A design flaw also hastened corrosion.

All of the cables were replaced in the mid-1970s.

There was another scare on the bridge during its 50th anniversary in 1987 when an estimated 300,000 pedestrians gathered on the span, which was closed to vehicle traffic.

The weight of the crowd flattened out the arch of the bridge deck and caused some revelers to suffer motion sickness as the bridge swayed.

Although the bridge supported its heaviest load in 50 years that day, Mohn would later conclude the weight and movement had not exceeded its design capacity.

Today, among the engineers' most pressing concerns is the potential effect of a major earthquake.

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurred during a live broadcast of the World Series, caused two 50-foot sections of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to collapse.

The Golden Gate Bridge was not damaged. But the quake still spurred bridge officials to undertake a massive retrofit of the span ? a $660 million project that began in 1997 and is still underway.

Bridge pylons have been reinforced with steel and towers under the bridge's two approaches were replaced, all while keeping the bridge open and its appearance unchanged. Retrofitting the suspension span is the project's final phase although experts say its flexibility makes it less vulnerable in an earthquake.

"If I knew when an earthquake was coming, I'd get to the suspension span of the Bay Bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge," said Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl, an engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley who studied the Golden Gate Bridge after Loma Prieta. "They are safest places to be."

The goal is to withstand an 8.1-magnitude earthquake when the retrofit is completed years from now.

The bridge, like other infrastructure, has a lifespan. But Bauer and Mohn say with proper maintenance, the Golden Gate Bridge will endure. The retrofit project alone will buy the span another 150 years, Bauer estimated.

"I believe the bridge was built to absolute great standards of workmanship," she said on a recent morning at a vista point overlooking the span. "What we are doing right now is repairing...and you can truly do it indefinitely."

(AP) ? One day, the small espresso shop near the site of the London Games was the "Olympic" cafe. The next day, it was the "Lympic."

So where did the "O'' go?

The manager won't say. But it's more than likely the small business became another casualty in the battle against guerrilla marketers ? advertisers who try to associate their products with an event without paying to be sponsors.

Protecting the Olympic brand is always a big job, and never more so than this year. Olympic organizers say the increasing sophistication of guerrilla marketers and the rise of social media are putting the five rings under assault in ways barely envisioned a decade ago.

That means action against anyone who infringes the Olympic brand or sponsors' deals ? no matter how small.

"There's no question that the rings are instantly recognizable ? it's what makes it attractive," said Stephen Greyser, an emeritus professor at Harvard Business School.

He compared the efforts by non-sponsors to athletes trying to find loopholes in the rules against performance-enhancing drugs.

"It becomes an industry," he said.

The International Olympic Committee and London organizers raised more than $2.4 billion from the sale of marketing rights in the four years through the 2008 games in Beijing, providing more than 44 percent of their funding during the period.

The rings are among the world's most recognized symbols. Companies like McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Samsung, which pay as much as $100 million each to be official sponsors during each Olympic cycle, expect organizers to protect their rights.

They expect organizers to protect their rights. If others can use the rings and the name "Olympic," why should the big companies pay so much money?

"Without our sponsors, the games simply wouldn't happen," London organizers said in a statement. "They provide funding, products, services and expertise to help us stage the games and with that have purchased exclusivity in their sector."

British lawmakers did their part, passing a law ? described as draconian by critics ? that gives organizers the power to bar companies from using Olympic trademarks and even certain combinations of words ? such as "London 2012" ? that may infringe on the rights of sponsors.

"Where there are serious or deliberate attempts to ambush the Games ... we will take swift and firm action," London organizers added.

But if the crackdown on guerrilla marketers goes too far, it could anger those attending the games or going about their business in London. Organizers will find it hard to tell people they can't wear their Nike T-shirt into Olympic Stadium because adidas is the sportswear partner.

"It's fine to clamp down on the threat, but where it impacts the individual, it's going to be very difficult for (London organizers) to get it right," said Hugh Tebay, a partner at Sipara, a British law firm that specializes in trademark and branding. "If public reaction is too strong, they'll have to backtrack."

Such worries played out during another big international event, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Bavaria brewing company outfitted some 30 Dutch women in mini-dresses in its eye-popping trademark orange for the Netherlands' opening game against Denmark. When the ringleaders were caught and authorities in Johannesburg threatened jail, Bavaria agreed to refrain from future marketing ambushes until 2022.

Four years earlier at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the brewery gave fans orange lederhosen. Guards confiscated the Alpine-inspired pants, forcing hundreds of fans to watch a match in their underwear.

Then there are the infamous cases, such as in 1992, when non-sponsor Nike held news conferences with members of the U.S. basketball team. Michael Jordan, who had an endorsement deal with Nike, accepted his gold medal while covering up the logo of the team's official sponsor, Reebok.

Some companies are already flying close to the sun in London.

The British company Virgin, whose interests include airlines, broadband service and holiday travel, has an ad featuring Jamaican gold medal winner Usain Bolt sporting a silver goatee identical to that of company founder Richard Branson. The campaign pushes Virgin's "super fast" broadband service, skirting the rights of BT, the games' official broadband provider.

Why do otherwise upstanding companies press to see just how far they can push the rules? It's because marketers lie awake at night hoping to link their brand to athletes overcoming all odds to win before a global audience.

The Summer Olympics are valuable because they occur so infrequently ? once every four years ? and the competition includes virtually every country on the planet. Although soccer's World Cup is similar in terms of national fervor, it goes on for longer, diluting its appeal, and it is less popular in that market of markets, the United States, Greyser said.

Unlike a typical sporting event, which attracts mostly men, the Olympics draws in both men and women.

And then there's social media. While Olympic officials previously only had to worry about ads and billboards, now they must also police Facebook, Twitter and blogs. And not just by companies, but by fans and athletes.

Athletes have all sorts of personal endorsement deals, creating more headaches for Olympics organizers. During the games, athletes will be barred from tweeting about sponsors. If they prefer Pepsi to Coke, they had better not say so, at least not in their Twitter feed, according to IOC rules.

It's not clear what would really happen if an athlete as famous as Bolt were to violate those rules. Organizers say they will take a pragmatic approach and that most cases will be dealt with "in an amicable way."

Still, it's a little sad to go by 61 West Ham Lane and see the maroon sign with the "O'' rubbed out.

"We really did put the pressure on," said regulator Steve Miller, who heads a body to standardize local regulations. The group has since stepped away from the branding business.

Cafe workers say the "O'' vanished after they became tired of talking to reporters. But even Miller confessed to being somewhat startled, having wandered by one day to see it missing.

"I thought it had fallen off," he said.

Flickr (Spring 2012)

Back in 2008, we summed up Flickr this way: "Dedication to building photo-sharing communities is what separates Flickr from its peers." That still holds true, but to that I'd add the site's dedication to displaying and organizing your images in the best possible ways. Recent updates to the service further all those goals, with a new view for contacts' photos and a slick new HTML5 Web-based uploader. No other site can match Flickr's depth of interest groups, which cover an amazingly wide range of topics. And, at $24.95 a year for truly unlimited photo uploads, it's a bargain for both online display and backup of your treasured memories or artistic imagery.

You still hear some tech pundits talking about how Yahoo "killed" Flickr. I don't know how you can say a top-50 website with 17 million monthly unique visitors (according to Compete.com) is dead. Today Flickr receives on average over 4,000 photo uploads per minute. That compares with 200 per minute around the time Yahoo acquired the site in 2005. Recently the site announced that it passed 6 billion uploads. On a personal level, I log in nearly every day, and though I don't have the hundreds of contacts some users do, I enjoy fresh images from around the world every time I visit.

While a thriving user community is important, equally important is that Flickr's developers continue to improve its features. In the past two months, we've seen the new Contacts photos page redesign, a new HTML5 Uploadr, and higher-resolution image-viewing pages. Flickr may have been overtaken by Facebook in sheer number of photos shared, but the dominant social network can't match Flickr's presentation, tools, and specifically photo-oriented community features. Evidence for its relevance can be seen in the fact that every photo app I've reviewed, whether a mobile hit like Instagram or a pro tool like Lightroom, has the ability to directly upload to Flickr.

You no longer need a Yahoo ID to get a Flickr account; you can use your Facebook or Google account, but of course a Yahoo account still works. At signup, you can choose a screen name, and you can separately set up a custom flickr.com/screen name URL. Once you enter your birthdate, you'll be taken to your home page, where clear instructions tell you the next steps: Personalize your profile, upload photos, and find friends.

Free accounts get 300MB of photos and two video uploads per month, while a $24.99 per year account lifts all limits from uploads and allows HD video display. Keep in mind, though, that as Flickr is primarily a photo sharing site, video uploads are limited to 90 seconds, but the playback quality is higher than on most video sharing sites. Only my paid account allowed a full 10MB, 4770 x 3178 photo to be downloaded, the free account limited it to 2048 pixels on a side.

Uploading
Uploading has gotten much better with Flickr's new HTML5-based Uploadr. I like it even better than some installed photo uploading software. You can drag and drop photo files onto it, and while the upload is happening, you can rotate the photos, add tags, titles, descriptions, people tags, and even choose or create a photo set. You can even magnify any un-uploaded photo for a larger view. Of course, you don't have to use the Web-based Flickr Uploadr, since just about every photo-editing app, from iPhoto to Instagram to Lightroom, can directly upload to the service.

Once you've got some photos uploaded, you'll get your first look at your photostream. This central Flickr concept is simply all the photos you've uploaded in reverse chronological order. You can change the photostream layout to show three columns of thumbnails only, two thumbnail columns plus sets or collections, or a single column of larger images with or without set and collection links at the right. You navigate through a photostream using a small thumbnail control to the right, but one behavior I really appreciate in Flickr is that hitting the left or right arrow key takes you back and forward no matter where you are on the site.

Each photo gets its own page, where you as the uploader can edit its title, description, tags, location, people, and permissions. Sharing buttons are also found here?more on that later. Others viewing your pictures here can add comments (as can you yourself), and click a star to designate it as a favorite (sorry, you can't favorite your own pictures).

Clicking on a photo on its photo page opens it in "lightbox" view?a larger version of the photo with a black background that lets you really enjoy the image without distraction. Flickr recently updated this view to take advantage of higher-res monitors; now a "liquid" view means the image resizes to fit the display size and resolution. From this view you can access several sizes up to full resolution, and download any of them. You can control whether you want to allow others the ability to download, too. Flickr lets you designate photos as all rights reserved or several levels of Creative Commons "some rights reserved" licensing. You can even offer your photos up for Getty Image licensing through Flickr, maybe picking up a few dollars for your efforts.

Photo Sets, Collections, Galleries
Flickr's photo organization offerings may at first seem like overkill: You have photo sets, galleries, and collections, not to mention groups. The first is simply a number of photos you group together, whether from a vacation, event, or some topic. These get an icon to the right of your photostream, and they're pretty much separate photostreams, though you can re-order them to taste. The Organize and Create page lets you do this by dragging thumbnails from the filmstrip view along the bottom of the window.

Collections are simply groups of sets. They get their own compound thumbnails, and they're only available to Pro accounts. A Flickr Gallery lets you collect other people's photos and bring them together in a presentation including your commentary and large presentation on one deep scrolling page. These are limited to 18 photos, in an effort to mimic an actual curated museum show. Some lovely work has been done with these Flickr Galleries, such as Blur(red), Trams, and Beijing, just to point out a few out of thousands. A surprising number use B&W photos exclusively.

If your interest is presenting your photos in more personalized, customized, and designed galleries, you'll be better off with the expensive SmugMug ($40-$150 per year, 3 stars) or the free Tumblr. While Flickr keeps the same basic interface for all users' photos, despite the fact that its lightbox is an excellent view that lets the photo shine, those two alternate sites allow a lot more freedom with backgrounds and formatting.

Tagging, Faces, and Maps
As I noted, you can apply tags and attach names to photos when uploading, but you can add and edit tags on a photo's page, and Flickr remembers all your previous tags, so you can easily click on them to apply to a new photo. Photo programs like iPhoto and Lightroom also can transfer tags to Flickr that you've applied inside the applications. Once your photos are tagged, they'll be more easily searchable by Flickr visitors, and it will be much easier for you to find all those photos that, say, included your cat.

Each of your photos pages has a map to the right of the main image, bidding you to add it to your map. If you don't, other viewers won't see the map. If you do want to add the photo to your map, you click the mini map, and a larger one pops up, onto which you can drag a pointer to the photo. If the image already has location data embedded, as is usually the case for pictures taken with a smart phone, Flickr's map will propose the exact location you actually snapped the picture?try that in Facebook!

Though Flickr does let you assign People tags, the feature is more limited than what you can get in Picasa Web Albums, and even to some extent in Facebook. For starters, there's no face recognition; you simply have to tell Flickr that the picture includes a person. Second, tags can only be of Flickr contacts. In Picasa, if your person isn't a contact in the service, you can simply use any name. You could just use a standard tag for this purpose. Another option, which I usually find annoying but one that seems popular is to add a note?you draw a box on a part of the photo and when a viewer hovers over the photo, text you wrote appears.

Editing in Aviary
Until recently, Flickr integrated with the excellent Web-based Picnik photo editor/enhancer to allow you to make changes to your photos without leaving the site. Since Google bought and shut down Picasa, Flickr has shifted this functionality to another Web photo editor Aviary. Accessible from any photo's Actions menu, Aviary's very basic interface offers autofixes, as well as a decent crop tool, an "orientation" tool that lets you level photos, and a decent selection of Instagram-like effects. ?It's red-eye and blemish correction work fairly well, but if you want a more powerful Web-based photo editor, check out Autodesk's Pixlr.com or Adobe's Photoshop Express either of which can access your Flickr photos. One advantage of Flickr's Aviary, though, is that it doesn't require the Adobe Flash plugin, as most other online photo editors do. This means it will work on the iPad and other Flash-free browsers.

Community
Flickr offers an unequalled number of avenues that further connecting to fellow photo enthusiasts?Groups, contacts, a profile, and even Flickr mail for communicating inside Flickr with your contacts. You can designate any other member as a contact, and further identify them as friends or family. Community is so important to Flickr, that your home page on the site, after greeting you in a different language every day, shows activity for your account?new contacts, newly favorited photos, and new comments on your pictures. This is followed by sections for your Contacts, Groups, and Explore--we'll discuss this way to discovery the wealth of imagery on the site later.

Flickr has updated the display of contacts' photos. Instead of a grid of thumbnails with text surrounded by lots of white space, now you just see the photos in what Flickr calls a "justified" view. The images fit together like a mosaic, with their original aspect ratio maintained. No need to hit a "next page" link, as the view now offers continuous scrolling through all the new images. The redesign is a real improvement, because it's now all about the images.

With well over 10 million Groups, you'd be hard pressed to find a larger selection of photo-based interest groups anywhere. Some groups boast in the tens of thousands of members, and some in the hundred thousands with millions of photos submitted. Topics span an amazing range, from nature and birdwatching to Extar 100 film photography to travel and portraiture. There's a group for every photographic style and taste. By comparison, the most popular SmugMug group I could find had only about 3,000 members.

To help you find photos of interest, there's Explore. This is both a menu choice, and a designation for great photos. Flickr members who want to get lots of exposure for their work covet the Explore designation, which means their photo may be displayed on Flickr's home page, and in a calendar of top favorited photos. The designation is based on "interestingness," which itself is based on tags, comments, clicks, and favorites. Getting your photo "Explored" means you'll get hundreds or thousands of views. The Explore page also shows a tag cloud, popular sets, galleries, and groups.

Sharing
Sharing photos from Flickr is a snap, whether you just want to share via email or post to a social network. Email, Facebook, and Twitter share buttons are right above every photo on the photo page, and hitting the Share dropdown offers the new choice of Pinterest, as well as Tumblr. If that's not enough, a "more choices" link offers Blogger, LiveJournal, and WordPress. You can also grab embed code or the direct link to the photo page.

App Garden
Flickr is extensible with a plugin API, and lots of external sites have also drawn on its API to feed photos that create mashups like the glopho news site and the pixplore world photo navigator. You can discover loads more in Flickr's App Garden. Many take advantage of Flickr's tagging, geolocation, and "interestingness" ratings. The other type of integration possible with Flickr APIs is with external apps. Any app?whether it's of the mobile, Web, or computer flavor?can ask your permission to access your Flickr account to either upload or access photos in your account.

Don't Flick Off Flickr!
If you just want your buddies to see the pictures you took at the beer bash the other night, Facebook is perfectly suited. But if you care at all about digital photography, you owe it to yourself to get stuck into Flickr. Not only will you get a way to display your images to the largest possible number of photo enthusiasts, but you'll get full-resolution image backup, interaction with like-minded photographers, and best of all, the ability to discover and interact with a limitless treasure trove of photography. All this makes Flickr our Editors' Choice for photo sharing sites/services. If your interests lie in rather presenting customized galleries of your work, you may prefer SmugMug or Tumblr.
