Greece raises over $5 billion ahead of repayment

International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde, right, looks at Luxembourg's Prime Minister and chairman of the Eurogroup Jean-Claude Juncker, left, and Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos Jurado, during the Eurogroup finance ministers meeting in Brussels, Monday, Nov, 12, 2012. Greece?s international lenders have prepared a ?positive? report on the country?s reform efforts, a crucial step in its efforts to secure the next installment of its bailout loan, the head the of group of finance ministers from the 17 euro countries said Monday. (AP Photo/Yves Logghe)

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece raised ?4.06 billion ($5.15 billion) from the sale of short-term treasury bills Tuesday, money that will help it make a crucial debt repayment at the end of the week.

With the disbursement of a massive ?31.5 billion ($40.1 billion) installment from Greece's international bailout long delayed, the country's finances have gone down to the wire. Without Tuesday's sale, Athens would have found it impossible to repay the ?5 billion ($6.4 billion) treasury bill maturing on Friday, the day on which Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has said Greece would run out of money.

Despite concerns over Greece's long-term economic outlook, the country's euro partners and the International Monetary Fund are expected to agree on the release of the next tranche of the bailout over the next week.

The country's debt management agency raised ?2.76 billion ($3.51 billion) from the sale of 4-week bills at an interest rate of 3.95 percent, and ?1.3 billion ($1.66 billion) of 13-week bills at 4.2 percent. The sale of the latter came at a marginally lower interest rate than the 4.24 percent seen in the previous equivalent auction in October.

The debt management agency will also be accepting non-competitive bids of up to another 30 percent of the auctioned amount until Thursday, as occurs with all Greek treasury bill sales ? as a result, the country should be in a position to cover Friday's repayment.

Greece has been locked out of the international long-term debt market by exceptionally high interest rates demanded for its bonds since 2010, and has been relying on funds from rescue loans by other European countries that use the euro, and the International Monetary Fund, since May that year. It has been carrying out short-term debt sales to bolster its cash supply while also receiving bailout loans.

My Chicago Kitchen: Simple Supper Stew

This time of year usually leaves me searching for soup, stew, or chili on the menu each week. It's a sickness. At this point, I just assume that it's going to be OMGCOLD all day, everyday, from now until the end of time. I really need something filling that hits the spot, especially after a long day at work.

If you've spent any time reading this blog, you know that I'm a bit of a crock pot whore. (Also, have I really not posted a crock pot recipe here since 2010? Whaaaa?) I get really excited when crock pot recipes require little more than "dump food in crock pot, go to work, come home, eat". I love those recipes, because I feel like they were developed by people who really understand that I don't have time to sit at home all day and wait for my crock pot to buzz. The phrase "four hour crock pot recipe" doesn't exist in my vocabulary.

This stew comes from Kim, of Feed Me, Seymour (WHY didn't I think of that blog title myself? WHY?) It's everything she promises it will be: simple, comforting, and filling. This was perfect for throwing together before dashing off to work on a Monday.

Beef Stew
(Barely adapted from Kim at Feed Me, Seymour)

1 lb. beef for stew (pre-cut stew meat, or a trimmed and chopped chuck roast, whatever floats your boat)
4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 c. beef broth
1 envelope beef stew seasoning
1 10 oz. package frozen peas

Place beef in crock pot. Top with potatoes and carrots. In a measuring cup, mix broth with stew seasonings and pour over the beef and vegetables. Top with frozen peas. Give the whole mixture a big stir. Cover, and cook on low for 8-9 hours.

Verizon confirms Droid DNA on its Droid Does portal, promising 'unboxing' on November 19th

Last we checked, there are about six days between Verizon / HTC's press event in New York City and November 19th. Which, by most counts, should be just enough time for the two companies to properly announce a phone, get it out to sales channels, and start moving 'em into the hands of consumers. HTC's Droid DNA has been leaked to death at this point, but a new mention of the product on VZW's 'Droid Does' portal all but confirms the true nature of Tuesday's event. For those willing to wait until November 19th, the carrier's promising an internet unboxing through its Google+ page -- for those who tune into our site, we'll get you one much sooner. Hit up the source if you're intrigued by intrigue, but don't go poking around for pricing or confirmed specifications.

Strong quake strikes Myanmar, 12 feared dead

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? A strong earthquake struck an underdeveloped mining region in northern Myanmar, collapsing a bridge and a gold mine, damaging ancient Buddhist pagodas and leaving as many as 12 people feared dead.

A slow release of official information left the actual extent of the damage unclear after Sunday morning's magnitude-6.8 quake. Myanmar has a poor official disaster response system and lost upward of 140,000 people to a devastating cyclone in 2008.

The nation's second-biggest city of Mandalay is the nearest major population center to the main quake but reported no casualties or major damage. Mandalay lies about 117 kilometers (72 miles) south of the epicenter near the town of Shwebo, and the smaller towns in the area were worse hit.

The region is a center for mining of minerals and gemstones, and several mines were reported to have collapsed. The region is underdeveloped, and casualty reports were coming in piecemeal, mostly from local media.

The evening news on state television showed Vice President Sai Maul Hkam visiting the town of Thabeikyin, where the report said damage included 102 homes, 21 religious buildings, 48 government offices and four schools. The town, a gold-mining center, is near the quake's epicenter and had casualties of three dead and 35 injured. The report brought total officially confirmed casualties to six killed and 64 injured.

Independently compiled tallies suggested a death toll of about a dozen.

An official from Myanmar's Meteorological Department said the magnitude-6.8 quake struck at 7:42 a.m. local time.

The U.S. Geological Society reported a 5.8-magnitude aftershock later Sunday, but there were no initial reports of new damage or casualties.

State television warned residents that aftershocks usually follow a major earthquake and told people to stay away from high walls, old buildings and structures with cracks in them.

The biggest single death toll was reported by a local administrative officer in Sintku township ? on the Irrawaddy River near the quake's epicenter ? who told The Associated Press that six people had died there and another 11 were injured.

He said some of the dead were miners who were killed when a gold mine collapsed. He spoke on condition of anonymity because local officials are normally not allowed to release information to the media.

Rumors circulated in Yangon of other mine collapses trapping workers, but none of the reports could be confirmed.

According to news reports, several people died when a bridge under construction across the Irrawaddy River collapsed east of Shwebo. The bridge linked the town of Sintku, 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Mandalay on the east bank of the Irrawaddy, with Kyaukmyaung on the west bank.

The website of Weekly Eleven magazine said four people were killed and 25 injured when the bridge, which was 80 percent finished, fell. The local government announced a toll of two dead and 16 injured. All of the victims appeared to be workers.

However, a Shwebo police officer, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said just one person was confirmed dead from the bridge's collapse, while five were still unaccounted for.

Weekly Eleven also said two monasteries in Kyaukmyaung collapsed, killing two people.

"This is the worst earthquake I felt in my entire life," Soe Soe, a 52-year-old Shwebo resident, told The Associated Press by phone.

She said that the huge concrete gate of a local monastery collapsed and that several sculptures from another pagoda in the town were damaged.

Other damage was reported in Mogok, a major gem-mining area just east of the quake's epicenter. Temples were damaged there, as were some abandoned mines.

"Landslides occurred at some old ruby mines, but there were no casualties because these are old mines," Sein Win, a Mogok resident, said by phone.

State television reported that more than a dozen pagodas and stupas in five townships were damaged, and many of them had their so-called "umbrellas" atop the dome-shaped structures crash down.

The uppermost parts of the domes usually contain encased relics of the Buddha and small Buddha images, and sometimes jewels. Damage to them is taken as an especially bad omen.

Sein Win said police were guarding a damaged stupa in Mogok and its exposed relics.

Many people in Myanmar are superstitious, and it is likely that soothsayers will point out that the quake occurred on the 11th day of the 11th month.

State television also reported that the tremors shifted the Mingun Bell, which people in Myanmar claim is the world's largest functioning bell, off its base. The nearly 4-meter-high (12-foot-high) bell, which weighs in at 90 metric tons (200,000 pounds), was installed in 1810 and is a popular tourist attraction at a pagoda outside Mandalay.

A resident of Naypyitaw, which is 365 kilometers (225 miles) south of the quake's epicenter, said several windowpanes of the parliament building had broken.

The epicenter is in a region frequently hit by small temblors that usually cause little damage. Myanmar suffered a quake of similar size in March last year near the northeastern border town of Tachileik. Last year's 6.8 magnitude quake killed 74 people and injured 111.

Residents of Mandalay contacted by phone said they were fearful of more aftershocks because the city has modern high-rise buildings that could trap people, unlike the mostly small structures in the areas worst hit on Sunday.

"We are afraid that another earthquake might shake at night," said Thet Su, a journalist in Mandalay. "I told my parents to run out of the house if another earthquake shook."

The quake was felt in Bangkok, the capital of neighboring Thailand.

It comes just a week ahead of a scheduled visit to Myanmar by President Barack Obama. He will be the first U.S. president to visit the one-time pariah nation, which is emerging from decades of military rule.

The disaster is the second to strike Myanmar's north in three days. On Friday, a tanker train derailed about 128 kilometers (80 miles) north of Shwebo, and at least 25 people were killed when overturned carriages burst into flames as they were trying to skim fuel from them.

Seasonal work: Six tips for snagging that temporary job

Claudia Pereira, left, and Shelby Kenngott, both of Spring Hill, Fla., fill out job applications in early October at a local job fair. The event was held to fill seasonal retail jobs for the upcoming holiday season seeking. (Octavio Jones/The Tampa Bay Times/AP/File)

If you think you can wait until November to get a seasonal temporary job, you're going to be missing out on a lot of opportunities," says Courtney Moyer, public relations manager at employment website Snagajob, in a telephone interview. More than half of hiring managers expect to fill their holiday positions by the end of October or sooner.

In 2012, some 63 percent of hiring managers said they planned to bring on additional help this year, according to a holiday hiring forecast from Snagajob. That's up from 51 percent in 2011.

Toys R Us announced in late September that it plans to hire 45,000 seasonal employees this year ? 5,000 more than in 2011 ? in positions ranging from managerial roles to sales associates to inventory workers.

Macy's Inc. expected to bring on 80,000 temporary sales associates, a nearly 50 percent increase in the number of sales associates it has on a year-round basis.

Taiwan's HTC settles patent disputes with Apple

(AP) ? HTC Corp. and Apple Inc. have settled their outstanding patent disputes.

In a joint statement Sunday, the two companies said they also signed a 10-year license agreement that will extend to current and future patents held by one another.

Cupertino, California-based Apple and Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC had battled over the patents for various smartphone features since March 2010. Apple was claiming that HTC phones running Google's Android software had infringed on patents it held.

HTC chief executive Peter Chou says ending the litigation will allow his company to focus more on product innovation.

HTC has grown as the first maker of phones running on Android software. But its sales faltered from the second half of 2011 in a market increasingly divided between Apple and Samsung Electronics Co.

It's major decision time

These major-market teams in position to make moves to secure their futures beyond 2013

Michael Bourn could be an ideal fit for the Texas Rangers in 2013.

Tony DeMarco

Their financial coffers are full, their successes in the near-past, and their futures uncertain. Welcome to the off-seasons of the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox ? major-market franchises facing major decisions that will impact 2013 and the near-beyond.

A look at each as the general managers' meetings wind down and the off-season kicks into gear:

Texas Rangers
There may be no more fascinating team to watch this winter. After the disappointing end to the 2012 season, there is little doubt that a major roster restructuring is in order.

Here is their list of free agents, almost all of whom won't be back: Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli, Ryan Dempster, Mike Adams, Koji Uehara, Roy Oswalt, Scott Feldman, Mark Lowe, Yoshinori Tateyama.

It should be quite evident that the Rangers are moving on from Hamilton. Oh, there is a scenario in which he could return, but if anybody steps up at all financially ? and you know somebody will if teams such as the Orioles and Mariners already are expressing interest ? the Rangers will let Hamilton walk just as they did with C.J. Wilson last winter.

That will leave an outfield of David Murphy, Craig Gentry and Nelson Cruz, meaning a move will be necessary ? whether it be either Upton brother (Justin in a trade, B.J. in free agency), Michael Bourn, a veteran corner outfielder type ? or even a position switch for Ian Kinsler, whose second-base defense slipped in 2012.

The latter option also would make room for top prospect Jurickson Profar. But so would putting Elvis Andrus in a package for Justin Upton. Mike Olt also would fit a Diamondbacks need, and should be dealt now, while his perceived value is high.

But the potential Rangers-Diamondbacks match is complicated by the latter's need for a starting pitcher, which the former can't afford to deal at this point ? although that could change if Zack Grienke or another free agent is signed.

And knowing the Nolan Ryan-Jon Daniels tandem, you can rest assured pitching will be the No. 1 focus ? as it should be. While Grienke is the only front-of-the-rotation free-agent candidate, there are a handful of quality No. 3 types, as well as several quality setup men to put in front of Joe Nathan.

Many dominoes could start to fall throughout this market once the Rangers spring into action.

Philadelphia Phillies
Payroll commitments for 2013 signal strongly that they will remain in win-now mode despite their 2012 fall from NL East grace.

They have about $123.5 million tied up next season in Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, Jonathan Papelbon and Jimmy Rollins, but that leaves a top-heavy roster with current holes in center field, third base, a corner outfield spot and the bullpen.

The temptation will be to spend to fill those holes and take their best shot at winning again in 2013, but that approach is fraught with risk. The free-agent center-fielder market is very deep, but each possibility carries more potential downside as length and financial obligation increases. And we're not even talking Josh Hamilton here, as moving forward, he's better-suited for a corner spot.

What happens for instance, if Bourn gets a six-year deal, and his speed diminishes after year three or four? A deal for a Dexter Fowler or Denard Span is the better way to go fiscally, but pitching will have to go to get either of those possibilities done. And then maybe make a smaller financial risk on a corner outfielder such as Nick Swisher.

The same goes for third base. If they can't trade for Chase Headley ? and it's far likelier that the Padres will sign him long-term ? the better option may not be a pricier Kevin Youkilis. Rather a cheaper, short-term option, and then counting on Cody Asche to be ready by 2014.

In short, it's a very tricky set of decisions facing general manager Ruben Amaro this winter, and of course, there always is the option of a more-significant makeover attempt that would include sending Lee elsewhere to fill needs and increase payroll flexibility.

Something along those lines will be far more likely in late July 2013 if things don't go well early next season.

Boston Red Sox
Their successes are much further in the past than the two teams above, but they do have the financial ability to rebuild quickly, as attracting free agents shouldn't be a problem.

There is reported interest in Adam LaRoche and Mike Napoli. But there doesn't appear to be a trade match for Justin Upton, as the Diamondbacks want a No. 2-3 veteran starting pitcher, and either a shortstop or third baseman, and dealing Will Middlebrooks probably isn't going to happen.

The Sox also aren't going to part with Jacoby Ellsbury, not with too many other outfield questions. Torii Hunter makes some sense, and so might Jason Bay on a small-guaranteed deal, as he did produce in two years in Boston.

But Shin-Soo Choo is the better, longer-term solution, and that's the way GM Ben Cherington ? now firmly in control ? likely is thinking. Because this is not going to be an overnight fix in Boston.

In fact, along that line, the biggest off-season changes may already have been made. That is to say manager John Farrell, and just-named pitching coach Juan Nieves. The latter quietly has built a very solid resume, most recently as bullpen coach under Don Cooper with the White Sox.

Nothing will turn around the Red Sox faster than an improved rotation, and there is plenty of room for it coming off their 5.19 rotation ERA in 2012. Nieves could turn out to be a very important figure around Fenway, where they went through three pitching coaches during Farrell's stay in Toronto.

Better sooner than later, the GM-manager-coaches-players merry-go-round has to come to a stop in Boston, and be replaced by stability and a sound organization-building philosophy.

Hunter Wellies Aren't The Only Snow Boots Out There (PHOTOS)

Last week's Nor'easter had many of us reaching for our Hunter Wellies. The rubber boots made famous by Kate Moss (and Kate Middleton!) are great for rain, but when it comes to snow, you need to opt for their snow-proof boots. Lined, rubber-soled boots are the answer for trudging your way through the snowy streets. And with so many cute pairs available these days, there's no reason to sacrifice on style.

Our personal favorites are Sorel boots, whose faux-fur lining keeps our toesies warm and adds a little flair. We wear them with skinny jeans, colorful scarves and statement coats as a distraction from the grey days. Here, seven pairs of all-weather boots that are just as great as your beat-up motorcycle boots. Oh, and if you're one of the lucky ones who has yet to see snow, well, color us jealous. Maybe these seven pairs of snow boots will inspire you to book that ski trip.

Nearly half of Britons want EU exit - poll

LONDON (Reuters) - Nearly half of Britons would vote in a referendum to leave the European Union and less than a third to stay in, according to a poll highlighting divisions facing Prime Minister David Cameron.

Polling company YouGov said on Thursday 49 percent favoured leaving the EU, 28 percent would vote to stay in the 27-nation bloc, 17 percent were undecided and the rest would not vote.

The British leader is under growing pressure from rebels within his party to take a tougher stance with Brussels when he attends EU budget talks later this month.

He also faces an increasing challenge from the anti-EU UK Independence Party and hardening attitudes against Brussels at a time of austerity and worries over the euro zone debt crisis.

The YouGov results - based on interviews with 1,637 adults in late October - are in line with other surveys and have been broadly steady this year. A related poll of 1,000 Germans found 57 percent wanted to stay in the EU and 25 percent to leave.

Cameron held EU talks in London on Wednesday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who warned Britain not to turn its back on Europe.

"Cameron must attempt to be perceived as a constructive member of the Union, while at the same time trying to satisfy public opinion in his own country," said Joe Twyman, YouGov's director of political and social research.

Britain's often lukewarm approach to Europe has angered many in the bloc and fuelled talk of London slipping out of a club it joined in 1973. Britain held a referendum in 1975 on membership of the EU's forerunner, with 67.2 percent of voters in favour and 32.8 percent against.

Cameron has urged his party to stop "banging on" about Europe, an issue that has divided them for decades.

He opposes holding a referendum on Britain leaving or staying in the EU. Instead, he wants to renegotiate its role in Europe and seek voters' consent for the changes, either at a referendum or a general election.

The next test of Britain's often-fraught relations with Europe comes at talks this month in Brussels to secure agreement on the long-term EU budget. Cameron has threatened to veto a deal if he feels it is not in Britain's interests.

National Brands Find Local Affiliates Lacking In Mobile Marketing (eMarketer)
National brands? investment in local digital marketing is on the rise. According to local-marketing automation company Balihoo?s September survey of marketers in North America, 35.9% planned to boost their local digital dollars in 2013; just 6.8% planned to decrease spending. Most marketers reported already investing in common digital marketing tactics such as Facebook marketing (69.3%), search engine optimization (SEO) and display advertising (50.3%) for purposes of local marketing.

eMarketer

In the coming year, the greatest number of respondents said they planned to implement digital tactics such as local blogs (31.5%), online customer reviews (31%) and mobile marketing (35.4%).

eMarketer

Specific areas in which brands felt their affiliates lacked expertise included mobile marketing, which is not surprising given the newness of this marketing medium.

Localized Mobile Ad Market To Reach $5.8 Billion In U.S. By 2016 (Search Engine Watch)
Mobile local ad revenue in the U.S. will grow by 54% by 2016, according to a new study by local media advisor company BIA/Kelsey. Mobile is projected to account for over 3% of local ad revenues by 2016. The mark would represent an increase from the 0.6% market share represented by mobile local ad revenue in 2011. The company says that mobile local ad spending will outpace mobile national ad spending and will account for 58% of total ad spending ($9.92 billion) by 2016.

BIA/Kelsey

According to the company's figures, mobile ad spending is projected at $2.7 billion for this year, with $1.2 billion spent on mobile local ads and $1.5 billion spent on national mobile ads.

Mobile Web Design Checklist (GoDaddy)
While the term "mobile friendly" may be subjective, there?s no denying that there is legitimate and ever-increasing value in making your web-based products and services friendly to your mobile audience. The first step in providing your users an improved mobile experience begins with asking the right questions:

  1. Design strategy - Who's your target audience?
  2. Optimal resources - Is your website fast enough?
  3. Navigation - Can I find what I'm looking for?
  4. Context aware - Is my website convenient?
  5. Touch aware - Does my website feel tailored to mobile?

A good mobile design is very subjective and should be catered to the needs of your audience; not simply follow a blanket set of rules.

Walk In A Mall, Receive A Mobile Coupon (The New York Times)
Smart online shoppers always search the web for a coupon before they make a purchase. RetailMeNot, a coupon web sites, is also trying to offer coupons for mall shoppers via their cellphones. It has signed on more than 275 merchants, and, in time for the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving start to the holiday shopping season, it will work at 500 malls. The app uses geo-fencing, which takes a cellphone?s location data to send alerts when someone walks across a virtual perimeter. The notifications appear even if the app is not open. People show cashiers the coupons on their phones. An average RetailMeNot user will see 38 coupons from 25 stores upon stepping near a mall. For retailers, these mobile coupons are one of many experiments they are doing to figure out the best way to target mobile consumers.

MasterCard And ING Group Demoing Another Mobile Payment Option (TechCrunch)
As if there wasn?t enough going on in the mobile payments space already, now MasterCard and ING Group have teamed up on a payment trial that mixes mobile and Internet payments to support shopping scenarios involving a mix of devices. One scenario involves using a mobile device to purchase an item the shopper is looking at on their PC or tablet. The trial is also considering a second scenario whereby shoppers might want a simple click-to-buy option when shopping online on their phone. The technology makes use of the Secure Element on the phone to support "a comparable level of security" to in store purchases. It builds on MasterCard?s existing NFC-based PayPass technology for mobile payments but does not utilize NFC to function. The trial kicked off in mid-October and is due to run through the first quarter of next year.

Six In Ten Convenience Store Shoppers Willing To Use Mobile Wallets (CSP)
Seventy-one percent of convenience-store shoppers would be willing to use mobile wallets to pay for items using their mobile phones and tablets, according to a mobile survey by market researcher Paradigm Sample. "Increasing consumer receptivity, and a greater sense of security when using their mobile devices for financial transactions, has radically shifted," said Sima Vasa, president of Paradigm Sample. "C-store shoppers are already comfortable making online purchases, so using their mobile phones as a mobile wallet just doesn't faze them."

SANDY AFTERMATH: The Future Of Disasters Is Mobile (VentureBeat)
When disaster strikes, fewer things are more important than your smartphone. So says mobile website platform Usablenet, which reported that mobile traffic to websites of utility companies like ConEdison increased by 16,000 percent both during and after hurricane Sandy. It shows just how important the mobile web has become for finding information about natural disasters both before and as they are happening. The trick, then, is to ensure that people can access that information quickly and easily. "The ability to access the mobile web becomes even more essential during times of crisis," according to Usablenet marketing chief Carin Van Vuuren. All of this underscores one main conclusion: Investing in mobile infrastructure is the most important thing the government and utility companies can do to prepare for future disasters.

ELECTION BONUS: How Mobile Is Transforming Political Engagement (Mashable)
There?s no denying that we?re a much more mobile nation than we were four years ago. That switch to mobile is affecting not only how we communicate with each other, but also how we engage politically. As of late September, a reported 88% of registered voters had a cell phone of some kind, with 53% of those voters toting around smartphones. For this year?s election, one in 10 voters made a political contribution via text message or a mobile app, and 37% of voters used their mobile phone for political information and discussion with others. Payvia, a company that powered political contributions for the Obama and Romney campaigns, created this infographic breaking down some of the numbers from this year, and making some predictions on what we can expect with the 2016 election. Take a look at their findings below:

Man put to death in Texas for woman's 2002 slaying

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) ? A man described as a fledgling serial killer by prosecutors was executed Thursday in Texas for a woman's slaying during a break-in at her home a decade ago.

Mario Swain, 33, received a lethal injection for killing Lola Nixon at her home in East Texas' Longview two days after Christmas in 2002. When asked by a warden if he had a final statement before his punishment, the condemned prisoner shook his head, closed his eyes and took several barely audible breaths.

Within a moment, all movement stopped. Swain was pronounced dead 30 minutes later, at 6:39 p.m. CST.

No family members or friends of Nixon were at the execution. Swain also had no relatives among the witnesses.

Swain's attorney, James Volberding, said no late attempts were made in the courts to block the execution, the 13th this year in the nation's busiest capital punishment state.

The U.S. Supreme Court last month refused to review the case, and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals last week rejected an appeal that contended a prison expert's testimony during the sentencing phase of Swain's 2003 capital murder trial was false and misleading.

Swain declined media interview requests as his execution date neared.

Evidence showed Swain threw the 46-year-old Nixon's body into the trunk of her BMW after killing her, drove to a remote area outside of the city about 120 miles east of Dallas and dumped it in the back seat of an abandoned car.

Nixon missed a dinner engagement with friends on the night she was slain. Her friends called police when they couldn't reach her the next day, and officers who went to her home found the back door jimmied.

Once inside, they saw blood throughout the house. A neighbor reported seeing an unfamiliar truck parked on the street the night before, and police tracked the vehicle to Swain.

He initially blamed friends for the burglary, then led police to Nixon's body. Authorities determined she'd been beaten with a tire iron, stabbed and strangled.

The tire iron was recovered from a trash container where Swain said he had thrown it. Evidence showed he used Nixon's credit cards and gave a piece of her stolen jewelry to a friend. Nixon's blood was found on Swain's clothing in the truck, along with her car keys and garage door opener.

According to evidence and testimony at trial, Swain gathered information about women he wanted to rob and then would attack them, forcing them to inhale the anesthetic halothane and hitting them over the head with a wrench or shooting them with a stun gun.

Lance Larison, a prosecutor at Swain's trial, described Swain as "a serial killer in training."

"A girlfriend told us he kept a list in notebooks of names and license plates of girls he would follow," Larison said. "I think he was working up to something."

It's not clear if Swain knew Nixon. She managed a Longview telephone call center where Swain once worked.

One of Swain's trial lawyers, Rick Hagan, said the evidence and vivid testimony from those who say Swain robbed and attacked them hindered the defense's efforts to convince jurors to spare Swain from the death penalty.

Larson said blood evidence in the case was "consistent with a struggle" inside Nixon's home, where she lived alone.

Deborah Hancock told the Longview News-Journal she and her husband were to have dinner with Nixon that Friday night after Christmas 2002. They stopped by Nixon's house with a carry-out package when she didn't arrive to eat with them. When their knocks went unanswered, they left the food at her front door.

"I can't believe it's been 10 years," Hancock said. "She was very outgoing and very direct, fun, lively. She was just one of a kind."

Swain's execution is to be followed by two more next week in Texas.

Groupon revenue growth slows in 3Q, stock down

(AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast)

(AP) ? Groupon Inc., the No. 1 online deals service, failed to show investors on Thursday that its business is growing as quickly as they would like, as it was hurt by what it called "continued challenges" from the economic weakness in Europe.

The company booked a small loss in the third quarter as higher revenue wasn't enough to make up for stock compensation and other expenses. Though revenue grew by nearly a third, it was below Wall Street's expectations. The Chicago-based company's stock fell sharply in after-hours trading following the announcement, indicating that it'll likely open at its lowest level ever when regular trading starts on Friday.

Groupon's net loss was $3 million, or a breakeven per share, in the July-September period. A year ago it lost $54.2 million, or 18 cents per share. Groupon said adjusted earnings were 3 cents per share in the latest quarter, matching Wall Street's expectations.

Revenue grew to $569 million, below Wall Street's expectations of $591 million as surveyed by FactSet. In August, Groupon forecast revenue of $580 million to $620 million.

Groupon's growth rate has steadily declined: In the fourth quarter of 2011, in its first earnings report as a public company, Groupon said its revenue nearly tripled. That fell to 89 percent in the first quarter of this year, 45 percent in the second quarter and 32 percent in the third.

Slowing revenue growth is a problem that's plagued many of the young Internet companies that have gone public in the past year or so at valuations that can seem astronomically high in hindsight.

CEO Andrew Mason said weakness in Europe offset Groupon's "solid performance in North America" in the third quarter.

Gross billings, a closely watched figure that shows the total amount that customers spent on Groupon's deals, were at $1.22 billion, up 5 percent from a year earlier. Revenue is a subset of that because Groupon has to pay out the merchants offering the deals.

Groupon pioneered the online daily deals market, which offers subscribers deep discounts on everything from spa sessions to restaurant meals to toe fungus treatments. The model sparked a flood of copycats such as LivingSocial and Amazon Local. Together, deals flood online mailboxes multiple times a day.

To expand its business, Groupon has been trying to establish itself as a local e-commerce company, transforming the market the way Amazon.com Inc. transformed online retail. It launched a payments service in September that lets businesses accept credit card payments using their iPhone or iPod Touch. The company has also expanded to selling physical goods such as electronic gadgets, housewares and clothes.

Groupon had 39.5 million active customers as of the end of September, up 37 percent from a year earlier.

For the current quarter, Groupon is forecasting revenue of $625 million to $675 million. The midpoint of this, $650 million, is higher than the $634.9 million that analysts had expected.

Groupon's stock fell 62 cents, or nearly 16 percent, to $3.30 in after-hours trading Thursday. Groupon's stock made its public debut last November at a price of $20, but it has fallen sharply since amid concerns about the long-term viability of its business model and its ability to grow. The stock ended Thursday's regular-trading session at $3.92 and hit an all-time low of $3.68 a week ago, on Nov. 1.
