Comments - Idaho Estate Planning

Thomas Kinkade painted serene, peaceful images of ozy cottages, gardens, streams, villages and rural churches. After his passing in April his story has been the opposite of what his paintings portrayed. Complications have arisen from his girlfriend. Thomas was in the process of being divorced but it had not been finalized. In 2000 he had set up a Trust and Pour-Over Will. So what is the problem you may ask? His girlfriend whith whom he lived with until he died has produced not one but two hand written wills that seem to defy his earlier wishes expressed in his earlier documents. If you would like to read more about the story you can find it here on the Forbes website. Debroah Jacobs wrote the article. Here is part of her summary.

What can others learn from this sad tale? The time between a separation and divorce is tricky, estate-wise. By law, spouses are entitled to inherit a minimum portion of each other?s assets (a third to a half, depending on the state), and unless they waive that right in a prenuptial agreement, it continues until the divorce is finalized. So it?s best for those who have separated to immediately revise their wills and trusts to leave the soon-to-be-ex no more than the required minimum.

You won?t be able to change your 401(k) since by federal law that money goes to a spouse, unless he or she has signed a form giving up rights to it. And in many states once a divorce is started you can?t change the beneficiaries of a life insurance policy or IRA until it is finalized.

It always comes down to planning and not procrastinating when changes need to be made. If Mr. Kinkades wishes had changed he should have gotten his attorney involved. Good adive for us all, good planning is no accident.

HD Trade Services: Use Photos to Track ... - Small Business Trends

Dealing with overseas suppliers, inventory management, and tracking shipments can lead to headaches for any type of business. But for small companies with limited logistics resources, managing shipments can be an even bigger hassle.

HD Trade Services

HD Trade Services, a Y-Combinator Backed software provider, aims to make the whole process easier for small businesses by using photos and videos to prove that shipments actually are where the supplier says they are.

The system works by using mobile phone and tablet apps to take photos and stream videos of the shipments or scan barcodes to supplement data entry. The purpose of this is to make business to business deals more efficient and to help improve liability for shipping companies and logistics service providers, instead of just relying on simple data entry to provide accurate information about the location and condition of a product.

With the globalization of the economy, shipping and distributing items, especially ones that come from suppliers outside the country, can be a big risk for logistics companies. Small businesses can often fall victim to trade fraud due to lack of communication with suppliers. The HD Trade Services tracking apps make it possible for those companies to make sure that shipments arrive to the correct destinations on-time and in-tact, and that they actually are what they say they are.

Large shipping companies like UPS and FedEx already have services like this available, but the HD Trade Services apps allow smaller logistics companies to offer the same liability as larger companies, by using devices like tablets that are widely available in the consumer market.

The availability of these products, along with the wide array of innovative apps and the ease and affordability of cloud storage, has made some important and often overlooked functions much easier for small businesses.

HD Trade Services has a variety of products available for different functions such as inventory management, product listings, and inspections.

Armstrong's small step a giant leap for humanity

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."

Google on Apple v. Samsung: most infringed patents 'don't relate to the core Android operating system'

When the jury in Apple v. Samsung handed down its verdict on Friday, we watched Apple take a victory lap and heard Samsung warn of hampered competition, but one company remained conspicuously silent: Google. This weekend, though, Mountain View finally released a statement, insisting that while Samsung lost the trial, the ruling doesn't actually implicate Android. "The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system," the company said, noting that several of these patents are being revisited by the US Patent Office. Still, buried in that statement is an implicit acknowledgment that if Samsung can't reverse the decision on appeal, innovation among Android devices might well be be stifled:

"The mobile industry is moving fast and all players - including newcomers - are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that."

Of course, Samsung has indeed said it intends to appeal (and an internal memo reported by CNET corroborates this), so it would seem that the proxy battle against Android is far from over, and the drone of legalese is sure to continue.

Govt hopes R. Kennedy Foundation will be ... - Morocco World News

Rabat, August 26, 2012 (MAP)

The Moroccan government hopes that Robert Kennedy Foundation for Justice and Human Rights, whose members are carrying out a visit to the southern provinces, develops ?an objective and impartial vision? of the human rights situation in the region and in the Tindouf camps (Algeria?s south-west) where they will go in the future.

?We expect international organizations, whether Robert Kennedy Foundation or others, to develop an objective, impartial and real vision for both the southern provinces of the Kingdom and the Tindouf camps, for a lasting and definitive political solution to this artificial conflict? over the Moroccan Sahara, Communication Minister, Government Spokesman, Mustapha El Khalfi, told MAP news agency.

The visit of the delegation, which began Friday in Laayoune, takes place ?under normal conditions,? he said, refuting unfounded allegations that the tour is subject to a ?security blockade.?

Morocco, he said, presented in 2007 an autonomy initiative for the Sahara within the framework of national sovereignty, and undertake a series of constructive measures, including the establishment of mechanisms for regional structuring of the National Human Rights Council, including the southern provinces, and the positive cooperation with the Human Rights Council in Geneva last May, in the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPC-2012/2106), under which Morocco has accepted 140 recommendations out of a total of 148, which was well received on the international scene.

El Khalfi focused on the national effort provided in order to ?overcome problems that may arise? in this field, through a participatory approach with human rights organizations.

The door of the Ministry of Justice and Freedom is ?open? to discuss any matter relating to human rights in Morocco, he stressed, noting that the Constitution opens the field to the adaptation of the national legislation in the field with the international commitments of the Kingdom.

Profiting A Lot With The Right Auto Insurance Methods | CarsA-Z ...

A lot of people think learning about auto insurance is a difficult process. Honestly, you will feel less confused the more you learn about it.

Check your state's auto insurance laws and requirements to understand what you do and don't need in terms of coverage. Regulations differ from state to state, so you need to know what is and is not required before you buy auto insurance.

There is a myth that insurance premiums instantly go down when people turn 25. Insurance starts going down at around 18, depending on their track record.

Maintain low car insurance payments by driving defensively and with caution. You have a better chance of qualifying for discounts for good drivers, if you go a long time without a ticket or accident. These discounts will save you money, and may increase each year you go without having an accident or violation. This will also prevent your premiums from getting too high.

If you are 55 or older and have participated in one of these classes, you may be eligible for such a discount. 10% is a perfectly great discount on your insurance premium.

Be sure of what coverage you need when it comes to buying car insurance. You will have many options, but a lot of them won't pertain to you. Conversely, if you've historically had small accidents, it is probably in your best interest to pay the extra to ensure collisions are covered.

For cheaper insurance rates, try increasing your FICO score. Like most businesses, auto insurance providers also check your credit report. Auto insurance companies started pulling credit when it was found that people with bad credit make more claims. You can maintain a lower insurance rate by keeping a good credit score.

There are a myriad of factors determining your rate for auto insurance. Gender, age and marital status are just a few of the more commonly known examples. If you know these factors, and how they affect your coverage rates, you can be more aware of what rates are appropriate when price shopping.

Take the time to review your auto insurance policy when it is time for renewal. Make sure your personal info is current. For example, if your commute is now shorter, the total number of miles you drive may be less, which could qualify you for a discount.

Check to see if your auto insurance will cover a car rental. If your policy doesn't cover a vehicle rental during times of repair, you'll need to find additional insurance that does. This extra coverage can add up to $20 per day. 00 every day while repairs to your car continue.

Ideally, you have learned information in this article that will assist you in making better auto insurance decisions. Information allows you to make wiser decisions. Share these tips with those you care about.

PETS: Ittie, Scout, Dennis - Bel Air, MD Patch

From the?Humane Society of Harford County:
???

Dog of the Week: Ittie
Age: 10 years
Color: White & Tan
Breed: Jack Russell/Chihuahua Mix
Gender: Female
Adoption Fee:$95
This sweet little girl is ittie-bitty, hence her name! Ittie is a mature dog who was found as a stray and brought to the shelter so that she could find her forever home. Content to just be held and snuggled, Ittie is a happy little lap-dog. She doesn't like sharing her food or toys however, so at this time we're recommending a home without any small children. Because of her older age and small bladder, Ittie also needs to go outside pretty frequently, so a home where someone is home most of the time would probably benefit her best. If you think Ittie would be a good fit for you and your family, stop by and see her!

Cat of the Week: Scout
Age: 7 and a half years
Color: Grey
Breed: Domestic Shorthair Mix
Gender: Female
Adoption Fee: $25 (until 9/3/12)
Scout here is a little older, but she prefers the term "mature", because she's certainly not old! Sure, she's got a better head on her shoulders than those silly kittens, but don't write her off just yet! Found as a stray, Scout has made the shelter her home for 5 months now, spending her days in the Free Roam Room, lounging in the sunlight or curling up in a bed. It's hard to miss this striking grey lady when you walk in there, as she usually makes her presence known! If you're interested in opening up your heart to a lovely older lady looking for a place to spend her golden years, please consider Scout. (P.S. All cats and kittens are reduced from $95 to just $25 until 9/3/12!)

Small Critter of the Week: Dennis
Age: Adult
Color: White
Breed: Rat
Gender: Male
Adoption Fee: $10
It seems hard to believe that he would be a stray, nevertheless, that's how Dennis turned up at our door. Intelligent, clean and affectionate, rats make great pets, and Dennis is no exception! If you're looking for a docile pocket pet or an easy starter pet for your children, then look no further than Dennis. If you're interested in meeting with him, stop by our small animal room!

PFT: Tannehill struggling for Dolphins again

Ryan Tannehill, Jonathan Babineaux, Mike Pouncey, Richie IncognitoAP

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is starting his second consecutive preseason game tonight, and for the second consecutive week he?s failed to complete 50 percent of his passes.

At halftime, Tannehill has completed 11 of 25 passes for 112 yards, with no touchdowns, one interception, one fumble and a passer rating of 40.8. Tannehill?s best play was a 15-yard run.

Tannehill?s accuracy has been a problem, although he hasn?t had a lot of help, either from his offensive line or from his receivers. Davone Bess has been solid, with four catches for 59 yards, but Tannehill hasn?t had many open wide receivers other than Bess, and tight end Anthony Fasano has dropped three passes.

The Falcons, who lead 9-3 at halftime, have gotten more going in their passing game, with Matt Ryan completing 12 of 18 passes for 162 yards, and Julio Jones catching four passes for 90 yards. Tannehill may be looking at Jones and wondering why he doesn?t have any receivers with that kind of talent.

Vandals damage monument to late Russian leader Yeltsin

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vandals defaced one of Russia's few monuments to its first post-Soviet president Boris Yeltsin on Friday, covering it with blue paint and chipping the letters of his name on the pedestal, police in his home region in the Ural Mountains said.

Yeltsin gained popularity by challenging the Soviet Union's Communist bosses with calls for faster reform, but he is reviled by many Russians who accuse him of hastening the Soviet collapse and have dark memories of his rule in the chaotic 1990s.

The monument, a tall stone slab with a carved relief of a stern-faced Yeltsin, was unveiled in the Sverdlovsk regional capital of Yekaterinburg 18 months ago by then-president Dmitry Medvedev.

State television showed workers hosing the paint off the monument from a cherry picker after the pre-dawn attack, whose culprits face up to three months in jail if found.

"We are deeply outraged by this act of vandalism," Vadim Naumenko of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center told RIA news agency, urging city authorities to ensure it is not repeated.

"Dialogue and dispute should be conducted in a civilized manner, otherwise we will move from rebellion to rebellion in Russia, from revolution to revolution," Naumenko said.

Yeltsin was elected president of Russia in June 1991, when it was still part of the Soviet Union, and emerged as the undisputed leader of a new Russia after he stared down the tanks of a hardline communist coup attempt that August.

Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union in December 1991, sealing its break-up.

Yeltsin was re-elected in 1996 and stepped down in 1999, making Vladimir Putin Russia's acting president after nine years in power marred by economic hardship, war in Chechnya and a decline in Moscow's global clout.

Yeltsin, who suffered health problems and bouts of public drunkenness, died in 2007 at the age of 76. Putin was elected president in 2000 and 2004, and again in March of this year after four years as prime minister.

Obese youth have significantly higher risk of gallstones

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Children who are overweight or obese face an increased risk for gallstones, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition.

Researchers found that children and adolescents who were overweight were twice as likely to have gallstone disease, compared to children and adolescents who had a normal body mass index. Those who were moderately obese were four times as likely to have gallstones and those who were extremely obese were six times as likely to have gallstones.

The study was based on information in the electronic health records of more than 510,000 children ages 10 to 19, from 2007 through 2009, who were members of Kaiser Permanente Southern California.

The size and diversity of this population-based study allowed researchers to explore racial and ethnic disparities. Hispanic youth were more likely to have gallstones than youth of other races and ethnicities.

"Although gallstones are relatively common in obese adults, gallstones in children and adolescents have been historically rare," said study lead author Corinna Koebnick, PhD, of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation. "These findings add to an alarming trend -- youth who are obese or extremely obese are more likely to have diseases we normally think of as adult conditions."

Researchers found a stronger association between obesity and gallstones in girls than in boys. Girls who were obese and extremely obese were six and eight times more likely, respectively, to have gallstones than girls who were underweight or of normal weight, while obese and severely obese boys were more than twice and three times as likely to have gallstones as their normal or underweight counterparts.

Gallstone disease is a major health problem in the United States, affecting an estimated 20 million adults. Symptoms of gallstones include recurrent abdominal pain and nausea, although many people with gallstones have no symptoms. Gallstones can block the passage of bile into the intestine, which in turn can cause severe damage or infection in the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas and, if left untreated, the condition can be fatal.

"The high rate of gallstones in obese children and adolescents may surprise pediatricians because gallstone disease is generally regarded as an adult disorder. Since obesity is so common, pediatricians must learn to recognize the characteristic symptoms of gallstones," said George Longstreth, MD, senior study author and a gastroenterologist from Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center.

"With increasing numbers of cases of gallstones in children, we wanted to better understand the potential role of risk factors such as obesity, gender, ethnicity, and oral contraceptive use," added Koebnick. "With childhood obesity on the rise, pediatricians can expect to diagnose and treat an increasing number of children affected by gallstone disease. It is important to identify other factors that increase risk as well."

This study is part of ongoing research and community programs that aim to identify and treat childhood obesity. The Kaiser Permanente Southern California Children's Health Study found that 7.3 percent of boys and 5.5 percent of girls under the age of 20 years are extremely obese.

Italian Food and Wine: Italian Food Myths

Author: Caleb Gould
There are many misconceptions that surround Italy's customs, and food. Lets take a look at some of the most common Italian food myths.

Italy is one of the oldest countries in the world, and thanks to the geographical boundaries of the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps it has remained largely unchanged throughout history. Even during the Roman Empire, Italy was set apart. Legions that had been abroad always knew when they had returned to the mother country. Italian food history, however, reaches far beyond the country's borders.

Another aspect of cooking Italian food is getting together some authentic Italian recipes. You can try taking a class on Italian cooking or picking up a cookbook from your local library or bookstore. The internet is another great resource, since you can search online for just about any Italian recipe that you can imagine. Save your favorites in your own files so that you can access them again easily. As your cooking skills improve you can try more difficult recipes until you become your own proficient Italian cook. You can even consider asking friends to exchange their favorite recipes with you as well.
Pasta helps create healthy Italian food because it cuts down on the amount of fat in the meal. If the meal is largely pasta, you will have no problem staying below the 30% of calories coming from fat. Of course this assumes that you are staying away from cream and cheese based sauces like Alfredo, and sticking to tomato sauce. Even most meat sauces are ok to eat. This is also true for saturated fat, again assuming that you stay away from the cream and cheese based sauces. So ordering an order of spaghetti with tomato sauce is much healthier than other alternatives.

When it comes to fine Italian foods, you must never forget the meats. There are many dishes that call for various forms of meat, and some very popular recipes ask for lamb or pork to bring the most out of the meal. The Italians have been using meat just as long as any other culture, and when you are going to enjoy a fine Italian meal you need to expect something to be offered that contains meat in it. Many of the fine dishes that grace Italian tables and wonderful Mediterranean restaurants, include poultry and or fish. This is a great way to get the meat in the dish, yet not have the recipe be too heavy where you are full by the second course. Italian meals that are made with meat can be enjoyed any time of the year, and the more you look to enjoy a fine Italian dish the more likely you are to find one that has your meat intake covered graciously.

There are many different light meals you can prepare with these simple ingredients. Here is one that will start you off, an Italian food classic, pasta with tomato sauce. You can use any type of pasta you want and you might want to try livening it up with variety. Italian food is not just spaghetti noodles. Boil the pasta in water with salt. Make sure not to overcook the pasta. You want it to be firm, yet tender. The most common mistake made in making Italian food is making mushy pasta. For the sauce simply chop up some garlic, an onion, and some tomatoes. Take a tablespoon of your quality olive oil and saute both the garlic and onions until they are soft. Once that is done add the tomatoes and cook until all the ingredients are blended together well. To top it off add your favorite herbs such as parsley, oregano, or basil. Try different combinations of herbs, there is no definitive herbs for Italian food so experiment and give your sauce your own signature flavor.

But once you do find a place with a good menu the next step is to learn to understand it. You want to make a good impression on your date by ordering something on the menu and knowing what to expect before the food arrives at the table. You surely don't want to order octopus soup because you think it is going to be a roasted pork dish. The best thing to do is learn how to properly say what you want to eat in Italian.

It really does not matter where you plan on enjoying your Italian food, as it will always please those that choose to dine on it. Whether you are going with a small family run eatery, or a large scale 5 star Italian restaurants the fact is you are looking for great Italian food. When you decide to dine Italian you can bet one thing for sure, and that is that you will leave the establishment full and satisfied. This is because the Italians know how to feed the diners that eat their food, and this is something that stemmed all the way back to when the chef was dining at their own home. Eating Italian is almost a cultural event in its own right, and if you are looking to enjoy fine food to quench your fan desire then look no further than a great plate of baked Ziti at your local Italian eatery.

One such place in Chicago that is among the most romantic of Italian restaurants is called the Italian Village. This restaurant is a staple in the Windy City and is a must visit if you are ever in the Midwest. It features three different restaurants. The upstairs is very romantic with private dining booths and a mural painted ceiling. You will feel as though you are dining under the stars in Venice. The upstairs restaurant is mostly Southern Italian cuisine.

How DriveSavers Got My Data Back

After getting epicly hacked and having my computer wiped remotely, I was left with the world's saddest MacBook Air. My useless machine came back to me from the Apple Store with a new OS installed on a 6GB partition, and what appeared to be a locked 250GB big blank slate on the other. But in the nothingness of that blank slate, I hoped, were the pictures, movies, and documents that I foolishly and lazily had failed to back up. I considered trying to recover the data myself. There are a lot of at-home data-recovery tools, and, well, it would make a better story -- or at least, a story that made me look better. But after just a little bit of research, I decided I wasn?t about to try.

The Essential Backpacking Checklist: What You Really Need To Bring

The Essential Backpacking Checklist: What You Really Need to Bring

Backpacking in a foreign and exotic part of the world is a dream not many get the chance to materialize in their life. For the few lucky, brave, and determined people that are able to go on their own adventure, their checklist and what they are bringing become a significant choice. I plan to offer some personal advice that lifts some weight of this heavy choice and help to show you what you really need to bring.

First, I want to get rid of the fear you have about what to bring as well as the doubts you may have about packing "light." No matter what you think you need, and how much you think you need it, half the things you plan on packing are not necessary. If you are traveling as a true-natured backpacking, you will only need the essentials. I decided from the beginning to travel light and once I had my stuff packed, I could not help but feel a bit scared I did not pack enough "stuff." I soon realized into my trip that all this "stuff" you expect to need are part of the old lifestyle you were living back home, not the adventurous one.

Now that we have outlined the reason why to pack light, I would like to provide you with a concrete list of what to bring with you. Some of these items and quantities will be elaborated on after the list.

-4 pairs of underwear

-3 pairs of socks

-1 or 2 shirts to wear out at night: I chose a flannel because it doesn't show the wrinkles when stuck in your bag.

-1 long sleeve shirt: Anything long-sleeved that keeps you warm.

-3 T-shirts: Keep them light and mesh material.

-1 windbreaker/rain-jacket: Preferably something that can also retain heat. Adidas has some nice options in this department.

-3 pairs of shorts: Make sure they are mesh material. That makes them incredibly light, easy to clean, and quick to dry. I choose this material also because it was easy for me to do a quick was of them in the sink at the hostel I was staying. Same goes for the shirts.

-1 pair of jeans: I recommend a dark wash because they may get stained and you won't be able to wash your jeans every time you wear them

-1 belt: I only recommend this because you might lose weight on your trip because of the constant walking...or because of your budget.

-1 pair of hiking shoes: Make sure they are comfortable, sturdy, and broken in for at least a couple days before you leave.

-1 pair of shoes to wear out for nightlife: This choice is completely up to you and your swag

-1 pair of flip flops: Do not buy an expensive pair, only get cheap ones and replace when they break. Many people recommend Moccasins but I felt a combination of durable hiking shoes and cheap flip flops for the beach days much more favorable.

-1 outlet converter: Yes, they really do have different types of plugs throughout the world! Wal-Mart sells a handy converter that covers all types around the globe for a cheap price.

-1 pocket knife: Everybody strongly recommended I bring one but I forgot to pack it and did fine without it. However, if you plan on camping then I would definitely bring one.

-1 can of mace: I recommend this for females as this is an unfortunate reality of traveling as a girl, especially solo. Although you do not have to worry much in western Europe, I have met people who have had quite uncomfortable experiences in the eastern bloc. Not saying all of the people in the east are bad but just to bring as a precautionary measure.

-Hygiene: Deodorant, small bottle of cologne/perfume, 3 in 1 hair and body wash (this stuff is ideal and saves space!), nail clippers, Q-tips, toothbrush and toothpaste, and the very important female "necessities"

-1 Money Belt: This is really an essential when traveling. First off, you will be have to be carrying more cash than you're probably use to carrying around back in the states since credit cards are not accepted like they are in Amuurica. That means you will have to withdraw money which also means international exchange, conversion, and ATM fees. You can escape with less damage by withdrawing larger amounts and avoiding frequent trips to the ATM. With this bundle of cash, it will be safe in the money belt and you will not have to spend any time worrying.

-1 Compact Guidebook: If your travel is short and focused, then you can just purchase the latest Lonely Planet or Rick Steeve's for that city/country. However, if you are traveling across many countries or more than one continent then I recommend a broad guidebook that covers the major sights. When you get to the major sights, ask the people from the are where they would travel in the surrounding area if they had the time. I found that this strategy gets you to the places that the tourists aren't frequenting as much and have a much stronger reflection of the real ethnic traditions of the country. Ideally, you can purchase guidebooks on your smartphone, Lonely Planet offers many, and not have to worry about the bulk.

-A Novel: This part is completely up to what you think you would enjoy but I would like to offer a bit of advice here. I recommend bring a book that is a bit abstract in the sense that each sentence, or even word, can be meditated on. I realized how beneficial this could be from personal experience. A Brazilian I met in Germany ended up becoming a very good friend of mine. One day when we were talking, he gave me a book he said he would like me to have. It was Richard Alpert's novel Be Here Now. Although some people think this type of novel is a crock of s**t, I really enjoyed the ambiguity of it because I could spend all of my train ride going over just a couple pages, seeing how it related to my life, as well as the present moment. I am not some New Age freak but these type of novels are perfect for traveling. Another example would be Confucius' Analects. In the end you are going to bring whatever book you want but I recommend something that will let your mind wander a bit.

-A Journal: This one to me is more obvious than socks. When you travel, the constraints on your mind get broken as the routine of daily life back home turns to spontaneity and the ideal moments where free will can be exercised. You're brain will be "turned on" in the most natural way possible and new observations will come flying at you. With all this new exposure to the wonders of the world, you will want to record some of the things you see, think, and feel. You can use a note application on your smartphone. I did this and unfortunately had it mugged off me one night in Prague. I lost all the observations, information, and music I had encountered on my trip. You have been warned!

With this list, you will be ready for any adventure that comes your way. I'll admit, there were a couple times where I was not completely prepared but I improvised and am here to tell the story. This should serve as a reminder to never underestimate your resourcefulness when the situation arises. In the end, I hope you remain brave and travel light! I am incredibly happy I did :)

Study: Tattoo infections traced to tainted ink

ATLANTA (AP) ? An outbreak of infected tattoos has led to an unlikely source: the ink.

With the growing popularity of tattoos, health officials say they are seeing more cases of a nasty skin infection caused by a common bacteria traced to the ink. In the largest outbreak, 19 people in Rochester, N.Y., ended up with bubbly rashes on their new tattoos, researchers reported Wednesday.

Infections from tattooing are nothing new. Hepatitis, staph infections and even the superbug known as MRSA have been tied to tattoos. Dirty needles and unsanitary conditions are often to blame.

But all the New York cases were linked to an unidentified artist who wore disposable gloves and sterilized his instruments. The problem, investigators concluded, was in the ink.

"Even if you get a tattoo from a facility that does everything right, it's not risk free," said Dr. Byron Kennedy, deputy director of the health department in New York's Monroe County. He is lead author of a report on last fall's Rochester cases was released by the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday.

In the past year, there have been 22 confirmed cases and more than 30 suspected cases of the skin infection in Colorado, Iowa, New York and Washington state, health officials said. The infections were tied to ink or water used to dilute the ink. Tattoo artists and ink makers should use only sterile water to dilute ink, health officials advise.

Scattered reports of the illness in tattoo customers have been reported over the past 10 years. But they may be growing more common as more people get tattoos, experts said. An estimated 1 in 5 U.S. adults have at least one tattoo, an increase from years past, according to polls.

The illnesses were caused by a bacterial cousin of tuberculosis named Mycobacterium chelonae (pronounced chell-OH-nay). The bacteria can cause itchy and painful pus-filled blisters that can take months to clear up, and involve treatment with harsh antibiotics with unpleasant side effects.

The bacteria are common in tap water, and have been seen in the past when tattoo artists used contaminated water to lighten dark ink. The ink used in New York was "gray wash," used for shaded areas of tattoos. The ink was recalled and has not returned to the market.

Companies that make gray wash sometimes use distilled water to lighten the ink, thinking it's clean of infection-causing contaminants. But the bacteria can live in that too, said Tara MacCannell, who led a related investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her study appears in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report released Wednesday.

Some ink manufacturers add witch hazel or an alcohol preservative to lower risk of certain viruses, but those additives don't kill off the hardy chelonae bacteria, she added.

Investigators found the bacteria in opened and unopened bottles of ink at the New York tattoo parlor. They did not find it in water at the shop, MacCannell said.

Health officials say tattoo customers should ask what kind of ink is being used and what measures are in place to prevent infections.

Always have, by the way. I am no Robert-come-lately. I hated it as much in the summer of 1967, when it first abraded the nation's ears, as I do now. That song has more sap than an entire forest...? Many will praise the extraordinary literary legacy he left behind with his death at age 91 - more than 27 novels, 600 short stories, and many classic short story collections, including "The Martian Chronicles," "Fahrenheit 451," "Dandelion Wine," and one of the the greatest...? And so, like the song says, another one bites the dust. In this case, "another one" is the New Orleans Times-Picayune, which sometime this fall will go out of business as a daily newspaper, leaving New Orleans as the largest city in the country without one. We should be used to this by now. The newspapers that now Rest In Peace include the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, the Seattle...? Read?More

There was a time, back long before the earth cooled, when you had to get up to change the channel! What! those who are not of a certain age may cry. Impossible! The horror! The brutality of it all! Trust me, it's in all the history books. And who is the man who helped lead us out of this dark and terrifying time? I give you Eugene Polley, inventor of the first wireless channel changer,...? A friend recently sent me a copy of an essay by the writer Hilary Mantel that confronted a problem faced by all historical novelists: How did those people talk? As Mantel, author of the excellent novel "Wolf Hall," pointed out, in any era the language in preserved letters, speeches and documents is much more formal than how people really spoke to each other. In Mantel's case, that era is Tudor...? Read?More

I have been asked time and time again - that makes twice - why I was interested in writing two novels about Sam Houston, a man whose name is well known but without anything specific coming to mind for most people. Which is one reason I wanted to write about him. He was, to say the least, colorful, which makes writing about him a lot more enjoyable. I'm sure there are people who yearn to write...? Read?More

Friends tweet before dying in Md. train derailment

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) ? They were seemingly ordinary tweets from two friends hanging out on a railroad bridge in their hometown, enjoying one last summer night together before heading back to college.

"Drinking on top of the Ellicott City sign," read one. "Looking down on old ec," read another. Accompanying photos showed their view from the bridge and their bare feet, one with painted blue toenails, dangling over the edge. "Levitating," read another tweet.

Minutes after the messages were sent, a CSX freight train loaded with coal barreled down the tracks and derailed, killing the 19-year-old women and toppling railcars and coal on the streets below.

Investigators were still trying to figure out what caused the derailment. Witnesses heard squealing brakes and a thunderous crash around midnight Monday.

It wasn't clear whether the women's presence on the tracks had anything to do with the derailment. They were sitting on the edge of the bridge as the train passed a few feet behind them, Howard County police said, and their bodies were found buried under coal. Authorities said they needed to do autopsies before their cause of death could be determined.

Killed were Elizabeth Conway Nass, a student at James Madison University in Virginia and Rose Louese Mayr, a nursing student at the University of Delaware.

The railroad is easily accessible from the picturesque downtown of Ellicott City, and generations of young people have played and partied along the tracks. The railroad was completed in 1830 and crosses over Main Street in the city's historic district, following the route of the nation's first commercial railroad, according to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum.

"We grew up running on those tracks," said Ellicott City native Bridgette Hammond, 25. "It's actually really beautiful up there."

Nass and Mayr were on the dance team at Mt. Hebron High School in Ellicott City and planned to finish college in 2014, according to friends and their Facebook pages.

One of Nass' sorority sisters, Donya Mossadeghi, called her "a joy to talk to" and someone who "would never say a bad thing about anybody." Nass made the dean's list in the fall in the fall of 2010 and 2011, according to a university spokesman, and another friend said she was studying special education.

Tori Mace, of Ellicott City, knew Mayr through mutual friends. "She was really fun, really friendly," Mace said.

A person who answered the telephone at Nass' home declined to comment, as did a family member who answered at a number listed for the Mayr family.

The pictures and tweets from Mayr were no longer publicly available Monday afternoon, but friends confirmed they were hers and police said they were aware of the posts and looking into them.

Jill Farrell, who lives across the street from the tracks, said she heard what sounded liked squealing brakes and then a crash, followed by silence.

Benjamin Noppenberger was getting ready for bed when he and his wife heard what sounded like gunshots. They waited about 10 minutes before going outside.

"We could see all the cars that fell over. I just saw catastrophe," he said.

Jim Southworth, investigator in charge for the NTSB, declined to speculate on a possible cause. He said the brakes were applied automatically when an airline used to pressurize the braking system was disconnected. He did not say what role, if any, the brakes may have played in the derailment.

"This will be a very wide-range investigation. We will look into the maintenance of the track, the maintenance of the equipment, the maintenance of the locomotive ? everything you can think of," he said.

The crew of three ? an engineer, a conductor and an engineer trainee ? didn't see or feel anything unusual before the crash, Southworth said. They were not injured.

The train was equipped with video recording devices that investigators will review to help them determine what happened. It was going about 25 miles per hour but Southworth would not say whether that was an appropriate speed limit for the area.

CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan said that the train was traveling from Grafton, W.Va., to Baltimore. It had two locomotives, was 3,000 feet long and weighed 9,000 tons, he said. The first 21 cars of the 80-car train derailed.

Environmental officials responded because about 100 pounds of coal spilled into a tributary of the Patapsco River, a major Maryland waterway that parallels the tracks. Maryland Department of the Environment spokesman Jay Apperson said much more coal lay along the edge of the tributary, raising concerns it could boost the acidity of the water or otherwise threaten aquatic life.

The derailment also damaged some of Verizon's equipment, disrupting land-line telecommunications services to clients.

The problems reached all the way to the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where pretrial hearings were delayed for a day for five men charged with orchestrating and aiding the Sept. 11 attacks because files on government servers were temporarily unavailable.
