Health Insurance For Children Only | Health Insurance Medical

Doubt no more. If you can afford it, upgrade your basic MediShield to MyShield Plusto get free coverage for children. MediShield is meant for use in class B2 and C wards in public hospitals and will not be adequate for treatment in private wards and hospitals. Of course having basic MediShield is still better than not having anything at all. But you are seriously compromising your options by not upgrading.
The benefits of upgrade your basic MediShield is that your hospitalization expense is as charged, without sub-limits on ward charges or surgery each day. That is no cash premium involve, as MyShield Plus can be pay from your Medisave account.

It is recommend that an upgrade be done for the baby right from the start. You may think, what's the hurryc But the longer you put it off, the higher the risk of your child developing a medical condition that may cause you financial burden.

The next question: Which plan should you choosec

None of the Shield plan insurers AIA, Great Eastern, NTUC and Prudential offer any free coverage for children. Aviva is the only insurer among the five to cover free coverage for children. This could be very helpful for parents who are worried their children may have such problems. If both parents of a child are insured under Aviva's MyShield Plan 1 or 2, all their children will be covered under MyShield Plan 2 for free up till age 20.

Buying a rider

Another important factor to look at is buying a rider to cover the deductible and co-insurance portion of each hospital bill.

For each bill, a minimum sum known as the deductible and a certain percentage of the balance, called co-insurance, will not be taken care of by the Shield plan. Aviva's rider covers either co-insurance or deductible or both, so a premium for its rider is cheaper than for those of other plans. For example, the total premium for an Aviva rider (Option A which cover co-insurance benefit) from one to 100 years old is ,000, but the premium is 0,000 for Prudential's rider.

To end up spending the same 0,000, someone on the Aviva rider would need to be hospitalized some 20 times (A1 Class Ward) before the amount they pay for deductibles makes up the ,000 difference. Getting the Aviva plan means that you won't be pre-paying for something you may never use so many times.

DIY cyborg appendage is less exciting than it sounds (video)

When we envision our transhumanist future, it's a little more profound than simply adding a sixth finger... but we suppose you've gotta start somewhere. Instructables user and employee Frenzy gave himself a rather primitive extra digit as part of a project for an Electronics and Robotics class at San Francisco State University. Sadly he doesn't provide step-by-step instructions for building your own cyborg appendage, but it doesn't seem too difficult. Frenzy borrowed heavily from other projects, using EMG sensors to trigger a servo controlled by an Arduino, which he strapped to the back of a glove. Like we said, doesn't seem particularly hard, once you figure out how to get the microcontroller to play nice with the sensors. Obviously this is just one small step step for DIY cyborgs. Next, we need to graph on a few extra arms to make one-man liveblogging a much simpler endeavor. To see Primitive Transhumanism #2: Sixth Finger in action, head on past the break.

Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS)

While plenty of attention is given to slim portable ultrabooks and big bruising gaming rigs, for most people, a reasonably priced desktop replacement laptop is all that a shopper is looking for when they are shopping for a new laptop. The Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) fits that bill nicely, sitting right at the intersection of affordability and usability. This entry-level desktop replacement laptop already had a ledger full of great features?like a selection of premium media editing programs and an advanced webcam sensor?but a new third-generation Intel Core i5 processor puts it over the top with category-leading performance.

Design
The new VAIO line updates with a wraparound design, where the grey plastic surface of the chassis appears to be folded back upon itself to form the bottom and palm rest of the chassis. It's more cosmetic than structural, but it does make for a slick-looking design. The lid is covered in bare brushed aluminum, with a polished chrome VAIO badge in the center. Along the leading edge of the lid is a strip of plastic, but being the same dull silvery color of the aluminum, it blends well. Measuring 1.32 by 14.65 by 9.99 inches (HWD) the plastic and metal construction weighs 5.3 pounds?a shade lighter than many similar systems, like the previous Editors' Choice, the 5.6-pound Asus U56E-BBL6 ($699.99 list, 4 stars) or the 5.75-pound Asus K53SD-DS51 ($779.99 street, 3 stars).

The VAIO E15 has a full-sized keyboard, complete with a 10-key numeric pad, and backlit chiclet keys. The keys are comfortable enough, but the backlight seeps out around the keys to a distracting degree. The touchpad is smooth and responsive, with right and left click functions integrated into the pad, and clickpad functionality across the entire surface. Touchpad gesture support is solid, with the two-fingered zoom and rotate, three-fingered swiping forward and back, and other functions working smoothly.

The VAIO E15 features a 15.5-inch display, with boilerplate 1,366-by-768 resolution. The widescreen display is brightly lit, and provides enough real-estate for tiling two windows side-by-side for effective multitasking. Sony beefs it up a bit with 3D support when connected to a 3D capable display via HDMI. The accompanying Intel HD Audio produces crisp, clear sound, but when I tested it with streaming music, it did get a bit tinny at high volume, but only slightly. The bass levels won't compete with an actual subwoofer, but the VAIO E15 still manages to provide decent low-end for a laptop.

Features
Above the keyboard are three dedicated buttons, labeled Assist, Web, and VAIO. The Assist button opens Sony's VAIO Care help and troubleshooting utility, which also offers easy to use menus for system settings, performance management, and security. The Web button opens up Internet Explorer with a single click, while the VAIO button pulls up Sony's VAIO Media browser.

Along either side of the VAIO E15, you will find a selection of ports, with three USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.0 port with sleep and charge capability, Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI out. On the right, you'll find a tray-loading optical drive, and on the left, jacks for headphone and mic. On the front edge of the palmrest, you'll also find two media card reader slots, one for Sony's ProDuo media, another for various SD card formats (SD, SDHC).

The VAIO E15 is equipped with a 1.3-megapixel webcam, which uses the same Exmor sensor technology seen in the newest Sony Cybershot cameras. Sony has added some extra functionality to the webcam in the form of a different type of gesture control. Instead of using fingers on the touchpad, it uses hand motions in the air. Hold your hand up, palm forward, in front of the webcam, and it will let you move forward and back between Web pages (in Internet Explorer 9), PowerPoint slides, or music tracks with just the wave of a hand, pause and resume playback, and even adjust the volume. The final function, volume control, gave us some trouble in testing, but otherwise all of the hand-waving worked fine, even if we did feel a little silly using it.

The VAIO E15 is equipped with a 750GB hard drive, which is common in entry-level systems, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Z570-10249ZU ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars) and the Asus U56E-BBL6 , which both had drives of similar specs. Inside you'll also find 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, and a tray-loading DVD+-RW optical drive on the side.

Unfortunately, that 750GB hard drive does come with a fair amount of clutter, both in the form of bloatware?like a 30-day trial of Kaspersky Internet Security, Skype, an eBay link on the desktop, and a Bing branded toolbar prepackaged with IE9?and Sony's own VAIO utilities, like VAIO messenger. But it's not all unwanted bloat, as Sony throws in a free copy of ACID Music Studio, Sound Forge Audio Studio, and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD. Considering the fact that every value laptop will include preinstalled programs, the inclusion of three premium media tools is a real plus, and offers more out of the box value than most competitors can offer. Sony also covers the VAIO E15 with a one-year warranty, which includes toll-free phone support and on-site service and repair.

Performance
Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) The VAIO E15 really shines among other entry-level laptops, thanks to its Intel Core i5-3210M processor, a 2.5GHz dual-core processor that's one of the first third-generation Intel CPUs (also called Ivy Bridge) we've seen coming to market. Paired with 8GB of RAM, the new processor helped the VAIO E15 to reset the performance bar across nearly all of our tests.

Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS)

In raw performance it topped the best entry-level systems seen this winter, scoring 2.86 points in Cinebench R11.5?ahead of the Asus K53SD-DS51 (2.77) and the Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B ($629.99 list, 4 stars), which scored 2.78 points. In PCMark 7, our general productivity test, it left every other system in the dust with a score of 2,495 points, ahead of the Asus (2,255 points) the Sony (2,400 points) and the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 ($779.99 list, 4 stars) (2,388 points). This lead extends beyond word processing and multitasking, however. In multimedia tests, the Ivy Bridge-powered VAIO E15 surged further ahead, tying the leading Photoshop CS5 times of 3 minute 55 seconds scored by the VAIO E15 and Asus K53SD-DS51 , and breezing past them all in Handbrake (1:39).

The new Intel chipset also features an upgrade in integrated graphics, with Intel HD Graphics 4000 putting forward performance that previously was unheard of without a discrete graphics card. In 3DMark 06, the VAIO E15 scored 6,651 points at 1,024-by-768 resolution, ahead of the Nvidia-equipped Asus K53SD-DS51, but falling behind the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 . Despite the graphics upgrade, however, the Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor doesn't quite have enough oomph for high-end gaming to get off the ground, with baseline scores of 28 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and 27 fps in Lost Planet 2, just a bit shy of the 30 fps that we consider playable scores. It does, however, mean that you'll have more than sufficient support for a range of other games, such as World of Warcraft.

The only area where the VAIO E15 didn't exceed expectations was in battery-life. It lasted 4 hours 34 minutes in MobileMark?falling short of even the 4:53 that the Sony VAIO VPC-EH35FM/B produced using an identical 44Wh battery. It's a far cry from the 9:01 of the Acer Aspire TimelineX, or the 7:42 of the Asus U56-BBL6, but those laptops also packed in much larger batteries (the Asus U56-BBL6, for example, has a giant 74Wh battery).

Even without the addition of a third-generation Intel processor, and the boost to processing and graphics performance that come with it, the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) is a strong laptop, combining slick design and solid construction with a healthy selection of hardware and software and plenty of features. Extras like webcam gesture control and a suite of premium media tools make the VAIO E15 compelling on its own, and thanks to an Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5 processor, the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) stands head and shoulders above other entry-level desktop replacements, replacing our previous Editors' Choice among entry-level desktop replacements, the Asus U56-BBL6.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The European Central Bank has a powerful weapon that just might push political leaders into solving the continent's financial crisis once and for all: withholding further help.

The ECB isn't likely to take any new steps when it meets Wednesday, analysts say, even as anxiety builds over the deteriorating outlook for Europe's economy and banking system.

ECB President Mario Draghi signaled last week that he wants to see stronger political and financial ties among the 17 countries that use the euro. If such ties are agreed to ? possibly at a European Union summit later this month ? analysts say the ECB would be much more likely to reward European governments and banks with the financial shot in the arm that they desperately need.

No cut is expected in the ECB's benchmark interest rate Wednesday, which has already at a record low of 1 percent. And there's little prospect that it will serve up more cheap emergency credit for shaky banks, after it already has handed out ?1 trillion ($1.24 trillion) in December and February.

It's a risky game because the eurozone ? the 17 countries that use the euro as their currency ? is in big trouble. Investors have turned their focus on Spain amid concerns that it will not be able to find enough money to prop up its struggling banking sector. This has pushed the country's borrowing costs on the bond markets to worrying heights, making it harder to keep paying its debts as they come due. There are concerns that Spain may join Ireland, Greece and Portugal in seeking international assistance. However, because Spain's economy is so much larger than the other three, any bailout would seriously strain other countries' resources.

The eurozone's banks have also been a key part of Europe's government debt crisis. Bailing out the banks is a huge burden on financially shaky governments, and weak government finances in turn hurt the banks that hold those governments' bonds. Most powers to regulate banks have been left with national authorities, who have been seen as protective of their domestic financial services industries at the detriment of Europe's banking sector.

And in just over two weeks, Greece returns to the polls with a real danger looming that it might elect a government that rejects the terms of its multi-billion-euro bailout. This could force the country out of the euro, irreparably fracturing the eurozone and further roiling markets.

A Spanish default, banking collapse, or a Greek euro exit, could spread financial shock waves and shove the global economy into another recession. The world's markets have fallen on fears that this is around the corner.

Over the past week there has been a concerted push by some of Europe's leading authorities to get the region's leaders to act ? and quickly. Last Wednesday, the European Union's executive body, the European Commission, called on politicians to work on founding a central authority with the financial muscle to fix its broken banks. The very next day, Draghi laid down a forceful challenge to politicians, describing the current setup of the 17-country currency union "unsustainable" and calling for a clear vision for reworking the foundations in place since its launch in 1999.

"Dispel this fog," he urged members of the European Parliament in Brussels.

Analysts say the ECB has a strong motive for staying put until it sees some movement from governments.

"The ECB looks tired of being the eurozone's fire brigade and seems to have a preference for staying on hold," Carsten Brzeski, an analyst at ING in Brussels, wrote in a note to investors. "It looks like the ECB will want to keep the pressure as high as possible to tackle political complacency."

However, the eurozone's problems could always force the ECB's hand. The region's economy could well shrink by more than the mild 0.3 percent predicted by EU forecasters. Key surveys of business confidence are pointing down. A shrinking economy lowers tax revenue and makes it harder for governments to pay their debts. This economic slide puts the ECB under pressure to act quicker than it would like. This puts the ECB and Draghi in a predicament somewhat like that of the U.S. Federal Reserve and Ben Bernanke. Poor hiring statistics on Friday have raised the possibility of more action by the Fed, which has cut interest rates to near zero but could do another round of bond purchases, a step which increases the supply of money.

If Draghi and the governing council see results from Europe's leaders at the June summit, they might be inclined to respond with more help. That's what the ECB did after the fiscal treaty was agreed in December ? following up with the cheap bank loans that help hold the crisis at bay temporarily.

Among the measures the ECB could introduce are:

? Cut interest rates below its current record of 1 percent. Analysts say they could go as low as 0.5 percent. The ECB might be forced to do that as early as July if the economy keeps deteriorating or there's a default or other disaster. Lower rates can help growth by lowering borrowing costs for businesses. But it is unlikely to act this week.

? Offer more cheap long-term loans to banks. The first two rounds helped ease the crisis by letting troubled banks borrow at a current rate of 1 percent for three years. It's a powerful weapon but carries risks of political complacency and losses on the loans.

? Direct purchases of government bonds. This would push the price of government bonds up and government borrowing costs down. The ECB did this intermittently to support Spain and Italy until late last year. But the limited nature of the program did not impress bond markets much.

But for the ECB to introduce these measures, it needs action from Europe's leaders. Among the options open to the region's politicians are:

? Plans for an EU-wide bank regulator and bailout fund with powers to take over and restructure banks, whose financial troubles are a key burden for governments. Spain's Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and a number of economists have proposed letting the eurozone's current bailout fund put money directly into banks.

? Some form of common debt designed to reduce the chance of default by any one country. Italy and France have called for these so-called eurobonds in which eurozone countries would guarantee each other's repayments. However, Germany, the eurozone's biggest country and chief contributor to bailouts, is resisting, afraid that spendthrift governments will freeload on its strong credit rating.

? More control at the EU level over what countries spend, a step that could ease German fears about shared bonds. There's already a new treaty limiting debt, signed but not yet ratified.

The reforms are tough to accomplish politically because they often mean richer, better run countries ? such as Germany ? taking on some of the risk for bad behavior by other countries that don't manage their economies or finances well. Or it means governments giving up control over banks or finances. And most would take years to implement. Still, quick decision-making by governments could reassure the markets and help the eurozone step back from the edge.

DNP EMBARGO Sony refreshes VAIO Z series with Ivy Bridge, price now starts at $1,600 without the external docking station

In case you didn't notice, Sony completely revamped its laptop lineup this morning. Unlike some of the other models on offer, the high-end Z series didn't get a redesign, but Sony at least took the opportunity to refresh it with new Ivy Bridge processors. Oh, and lower the starting price. The Z will no longer be bundled with the Power Media Dock, that external hub housing both a discrete GPU and optical drive. As such, the laptop will now start at $1,600, down from $2,000, while the dock will retail for an additional $400. Spec-wise, the Z still weighs a scant 2.6 pounds, but it's now constructed from carbon fiber and will be offered with a glossy finish. It will also be available with quad-core Ivy Bridge CPUs, though the starting model's processor is dual-core. Otherwise, it offers nearly the same specs as the model we reviewed last year, including a 1080p display and solid-state RAID drives. Look for the refresh sometime this month, and in the meantime we've included pics below to jog your memory on what this guy looks like.

Pivothead review video recording eyewear for reasonably discrete POV clips

We won't mince words -- the Pivothead Durango have a decidedly "sporty" style that probably won't win it too many fans. But, if you're in the market for some POV video action, chances are style isn't particularly high on your list of must-have features. They have the appearance of low-key, but bulky Oakley knockoffs. But again, if you're hurtling yourself down a hill on snowboard, how cool your specs look is probably secondary to recording high quality video and absorbing a beating. So, we promise, this is the last you'll hear about how unsightly these things are. (And they are just that -- ugly.) Once you head past the break we'll have video samples, photo samples and field tests, but nary a word about how embarrassing it is to walk around in public with these on. Promise. So, join us below as we put Pivothead's video sunglasses through their paces.

Matthew Kluger Sentenced To Record 12 Years In Prison For Insider Trading

NEW YORK, June 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. lawyer who worked for some of the country's most prestigious firms was sentenced on Monday to a record 12 years jail for an insider trading scheme which lasted 17 years and netted more than $37 million between 1994 and 2011.
Matthew Kluger's sentence is the longest ever handed down in an insider trading case and is one year longer than the 11 year jail term imposed last year on Galleon Group hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam for insider trading charges.
Kluger was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Katharine Hayden of Newark federal court. Hayden also sentenced stock trader Garrett Bauer to nine-years jail for his role in the scheme and a third person, Kenneth Robinson, is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday.
"The severe sentences imposed today are a warning to anyone trying to game the financial markets for their own enrichment," said New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman in a statement.
An attorney for Kluger said he planned to appeal against the sentence. "It is unduly harsh and fails to reflect that Mr Kluger received only a fraction of the proceeds from the offense," said attorney Alan Zegas.
An attorney for Bauer did not return a call seeking comment.
Federal prosecutors and securities regulators accused the trio of trading on inside information ahead of at least 11 corporate deals.
The three men used merger secrets gathered by Kluger while he worked as a corporate attorney for prominent law firms, including Cravath Swaine & Moore; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
In one instance, Kluger tipped Robinson on Oracle Corp's impending acquisition of Sun Microsystems Inc in 2009. In another, the trio traded ahead of Intel Corp's takeover of McAfee Inc in 2010.
Bauer kept the majority of the proceeds, using some of the profits to buy a $6.65-million condominium on Manhattan's Upper East Side and an $875,000 home in Boca Raton, Florida.
Robinson acted as a middleman between Kluger and Bauer in an elaborate scheme that involved the use of public payphones and prepaid disposable cell phones in an attempt to hide their activities from law enforcement. Prosecutors said the men netted more than $37 million between 1994 and 2011.
The three men have agreed to pay back their ill-gotten gains plus interest. Bauer agreed to pay $31.6 million, Kluger will pay $516,000 and Robinson settled for $845,000, an amount regulators said reflected his willingness to aid authorities.
Both Bauer and Kluger pleaded guilty in December to one count each of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, securities fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and obstruction of justice. Robinson pleaded guilty in April 2011 to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and two counts of securities fraud.
The case is United States v. Bauer et al, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, 11-03536.
